Registry Office Wedding - opinions needed on Bride's dress

DontTellAnyoneImGettingMarried · 23/04/2007 16:02

I'm getting married in a few weeks in a fairly small registry office 'do'. I've only ever been to one registry office wedding myself so not really sure what the bride should wear and all the people I've asked in rl have different opinions!

I want something fairly traditional but don't want to look OTT (if this is possible). Two favourites so far (albeit quite different ones)are this monsoon one or this m&s one

Thoughts please

I thought they were quite similar in style, but prefer the M&S one, tbh...

wurlywurly · 23/04/2007 16:03

think you should wear what ever you feel comfortable in. Just because its a registry office doesnt mean you still cant "dress up". Love both of the dresses you have linked tho.

MrsBadger · 23/04/2007 16:04

Both dresses are lovely.
Wear whatever you'll be comfortable in but remember you'll be photographed more than at any other point in your life...

Are you suitable shaped to do strapless well? Have you tried them on? I really thought I wnated a strapless dress till I saw myself in one...

expatinscotland · 23/04/2007 16:04

I actually prefer the one in the upper left hand corner of the M&S page because I truly abhor all manner of strapless dresses.

fryalot · 23/04/2007 16:04

I love the Monsoon one.

In fact, I love it so much, I may try to pursuade dp to marry me so I can buy it too.

Really, really, really love it.

bobsyouruncle · 23/04/2007 16:06

I think anything goes for a registry office do, so whatever you feel happy in. I wore a simple 2 piece wedding dress for mine. That monsoon dress is gorgeous!

Clary · 23/04/2007 16:14

I think you can wear what you want to register office.

Have certainly seen plenty of big white weddign dresses there.

As Mrs B says, you need to look gorgeous - and also it needs to be clear you are the bride.

I like both dresses as long as strapless is good on you (it is not on me but then I am, ahem, norkular).

MuminBrum · 23/04/2007 16:15

I'm in Expat's camp - I think strapless dresses are abominable at any time and doubly abominable during the day. Sorry!
I don't actually think that "wedding dress" type dresses are appropriate at registry office weddings - I prefer to see a bride in a lovely suit or non-bridal dress. But that's just me, and if you want to wear a wedding dress, then you should go for it. But if you do go for strapless, please make sure that you don't bulge over the top - check your side and back views!

DontTellAnyoneImGettingMarried · 23/04/2007 16:15

I've tried both of them on - unfortunatley only the monsoon one in one size too big as that was all they had in stock! The main difference I guess is between a 3/4 length one (monsoon) and full length (M&S). Even though the the m&s one doesn't look quite full length on the model, but then she's probably a good few inches taller than me.

I agree with Expat too. I prefer the top corner one as I don't like strapless dresses but that's on me. I never think they're awful on other people.

All that said, I prefer the M&S on.
Good luck!

cece · 23/04/2007 17:51

I like the skirt on the M&S one, is it layered?

ChippyMinton · 23/04/2007 17:54

Agree about strapless dresses. I prefer the vintage look of the monsoon one (and the colour), it's less formal and better suited to a register office.

mamatres · 23/04/2007 18:12

i absolutely adore the monsoon one. i'd like to get it myself, were i not already married

JoPG · 23/04/2007 18:24

Another vote for the Monsson one from me, though both are lovely

edam · 23/04/2007 18:28

M&S one has that odd neckline that some strapless dresses suffer from - where it dips down at the back. Always think those styles it looks as if they are dragging the wearer's breasts down.

Not sure I like the bow at the front of the Monsoon one, could you take it off?

Hope you have a lovely day whichever you choose.

UtterPigsty · 23/04/2007 18:29

HATE STRAPLESS

DontTellAnyoneImGettingMarried · 23/04/2007 19:42

So there's a definite 'NOT STRAPLESS' camp then . I'm afraid my mind is made up though, it's definitely one of these two.

cece, yes the skirt on the M&S one is layered. IIRC silk underneath and net on top. Also comes with matching stole, v good value for £175.

edam, not sure if the bow comes off but you can wear it at the side which I think looks better than at the front.

Looks like the Monsoon one is winning the MN vote at the moment .... need to find one to try on in the right size now.

I prefer the one expat pointed to as well. I don't think strapless is very, ahem, classy. Sorry

cece · 23/04/2007 20:22

I like the one with the net then although have to say I wouldn't feel comfortable in strapless all day. Would worry about it falling down. Also think you need lovely figure and skin to carry it off - which I ma sure you have

kickassangel · 23/04/2007 20:29

i prefer the monsoon one. what complexion do you have? white (m&s) can be very draining, cream/evory tends to be more flattering unless you are very young/darker skin

bewilderbeast · 23/04/2007 20:48

I prefer the monsoon one it's beautiful

newgirl · 23/04/2007 22:05

both are fab

def wear a wrap/stole during the ceremony - that should please the anti-strapless camp!

every register/civil do ive been to bride has worn a full dress so go for it!

ash6605 · 23/04/2007 22:08

Both are lovely dresses but the 3/4 would be better suited for a summer wedding IMO with a nice pair of strappy sandals

Aefondkiss · 23/04/2007 22:09

I prefer the monsoon one

hatwoman · 23/04/2007 22:12
