Best epilator?

I used one years ago but found it incredibly painful, but I'd like to try again. So I thought you guys might know which ones are the best.
Is there much difference between the £25 ones and the £100?
Don't want to waste ££ if I don't get on with it.
It'll be for legs and underarms, don't need a million functions.
TIA Smile

No big epilator fans around them? Sad

I've got one I bought last year, Braun iirc. Was in the sale, must've been about £30, I think. It still hurt like a bugger though. And I've got ingrown hairs to boot. Sorry. It's supposed to be better each subsequent time. I'm too traumatized from the first time to put that to the test.

I have an own brand one from Boots. Bought it in the clearance section for £18 I think. It's ok. I don't find it painful.

CactusCactusCactus · 22/12/2017 19:19

I didn't find it painful, but did get big issues with ingrown hairs which got infected. Followed all hygiene procedures.

I got one years ago from QVC (Rio brand IIRC)

It takes ages to do my legs but I don't find it painful (wouldn't use it on bikini/armpits myself) .
i use an exfoliant the day before then sit with a towel on the floor and just waft it round my legs.

I'm thinking of a new one myself so watching this thread Smile

I've got a Braun one, it's awful. You have to go over each bit five or six times, and it really hurts. Not recommended.

Lovelilies · 23/12/2017 21:55

I've bought the Philips silkepil (I think). Need to buy a bloody adapter to charge it though now Confused

That’s the one I have and I love it! Still as good as new 3 and a half years on. I use the epilator and razor for bikini line and it’s brilliant.

Give the epilator head a proper clean out often.

And use Tend Skin if you get any ingrown hairs. It reeks to high heaven but my skin is all smooth and lovely again.

Lovelilies · 23/12/2017 23:14

Oh that's good to know Smile
What's tendskin?

I have a Remington 5in1 it's brill. Yes it hurts like hell the first time after shaving, but I've been epilating for 12 years now, 5 weeks easily between goes and takes 10 mins. No pain at all anymore unless I've done a lazy leg shave.

DH calls it my skin eater! It treats ingrowing hair and razor rash. Comes in a squeezy bottle, bung some on a cotton wool pad and wipe it over your skin. If it’s on your bikini area just the sides if you get me! Do it after you epilate, might sting a bit, and if you have bumps then do it twice a day. I saw it in a buzzfeed article and it’s honestly brilliant. Get a small bottle and see how it goes. I don’t use it as often now but when I started I didn’t realise how bumpy the skin was till it got smooth again.

Enjoy your epilator! I don’t really find it hurts but pull the skin taught before you run the epilator over an area and that helps.

Let us know how you get on Smile

Sort to hijack this thread but there seems to be some expertise here! I've bought a Braun one but it seems to break off a lot of the hairs instead of pulling them out. So my legs look fine but feel quite subbly. Any idea where I'm going wrong?
I used one years ago and seemed to get one well with it for legs. Never managed it on my underarms regularly though, found it very painful there...

Philips are the best I think. Don't get the ones that have little tweezers, get the kind with the metal plates. The tweezers take forever and break the hairs instead of removing them. In the case of an epilator I think it's worth paying more for a cordless one with a good-size head, otherwise you're stuck doing it for hours next to a power point (and you have to cover the floor unless you don't mind all the hairs getting stuck on it).

If it hurts I'd recommend shaving first, then in a day or two try epilating. Then epilate again a day or two later, then a day or two later until you're relatively hair-free. (If you're only removing one cycle of hair at a time it won't be so painful.) Then you shouldn't need more than once every couple of weeks. Also taking a paracetamol beforehand should help (and your legs don't seem to get as red). Glycollic is great to prevent ingrowing hairs.

I love my epilator and wouldn't ever go back to waxing.

Interesting to hear about ingrowing hairs. I am definitely going to bin mine now. I saw a woman on the tv doctors programme with cysts due to ingrowing hair after using epilator in groin area.

TidyLike · 26/12/2017 21:57

I have tried both Braun and Philips over the years and haven't noticed a huge difference. I stopped epilating about a decade ago but stopped because of the ingrowing hairs, (not unbearable) pain, and the fact that it takes ages. I switched to shaving. Then recently I decided to give the epilator another outing and was surprised at how quick and painless it was. I was thinking of getting a Philips Lumea but I've put that on hold now and am going to see how I get on with epilating ...

Exactly what happened to me!
