Please tell me what hair dye you use to cover grey roots

I have fairly dark brown hair which is lighter at the bottom due to grown out highlights.

The greys are appearing more now at the roots so I have been having been regular root tints at the hairdressers to cover them. This costs me £40 a time and I need it doing every 6 weeks, by then my hair is starting to look awful with grey wiry roots showing.

I really don't want to spend this amount of money and time at the salon when there are so many products on sale in the supermarket, Boots etc.

A friend does her own with a dye that costs her £5.00 and her hair looks amazing, as if she's had a full head of highlights. I can't use the same colour as her though as she is very fair.

My plan is to do this over my time off work over Christmas just in case it goes horribly wrong!

So I need recommendations for hair dyes for my colour hair and any tips would be welcomed. Also will a semi permanent cover greys? Not sure I'm brave enough to go straight in with a perm colour!

Thanks for any suggestions.

I colour my natural auburn hair a mid brown colour. My roots are very stubborn & I do have a few greys, I've tried a few home dyes that haven't managed to cover my roots at all!

One of the best that I've tried & use is the Schwarzkopf Poly Colour Tint, I use either Natural Brown or Medium brown for a slightly darker result. Both leave my hair a lovely natural brown colour & more importantly cover my roots! It's a permanent colour, however, I do find a bit of colour fade after about 4 weeks so I find using the medium brown lasts longer. It doesn't come with conditioner so you just need to use your own, but at £2 a box (from Wilkos, Sainsbury's & I think Asda). The instructions says to leave on for 30 mins, but for my roots I leave on for 40 mins. I don't cover the lengths of my hair every time I do my roots as it isn't necessary.

I'm not sure about semis, I'm yet to find one that will cover my stubborn roots! Nice & Easy is quite good too and have a good range of colours.

My hair sounds similar to yours, I now have to touch up roots every 1-2 weeks!

I use the L’Oreal magic retouch spray if I haven’t had time to do it, really good and doesn’t come off on my fingers!

I also use the clairol nice n easy route touch up (for in between) that takes 10 mins. They’re quite often on offer-would be a rip off at full price!

More more stubourn regrowth I use a normal nice and easy.

Pain in the bum though.

I’ve discovered that spray the other day in Boots. Not sure what brand I got but you spray it on to cover greys and then it washes out when you shampoo your hair. It’s great for tiding you over if you don’t want to be tinting all the time.

My mum uses indigo or henna every week or as and when grey shows. As it’s natural, provided you have no allergies, there’s no real limit to how often you can use it.

Find out what dye your hairdresser uses and buy it on ebay.

My hairdresser uses l'oreal majirel and then a 20% developer creme.

She's very nice so she taught me how to mix the products and I purchased a dye kit from boots to help - with the brush and measuring bowl etc.

I still need her to come every 8 weeks or so but in between - about every 10 days or so I do the roots around my hairline and parting. It makes such a difference - I don't feel like I ever have grey roots showing.

I could probably do it much more often if my husband helped to do the back but I like the hairdresser coming and she also trims it every 8 weeks and highlights it every 12.

Oh and I literally do less than a centimetre of roots every 10 days - you don't want to be doing loads of hair - you'll get build up.

I’m over 60 - just Grin - and I have been using Nice & Easy for years! (For exactly the same reason as you are considering doing same.)

I never use full head permanent hair dye as semi perm is much less harsh, (hairdresser told me this.). I now need to do mine every 3-4 weeks. I use their semi perm hair colour on full head on week 1 and then use their root touch up 3-4 weeks later, back to full head semi perm 3-4 weeks after this. I alternate like this constantly. Works brilliantly and people often compliment me on my hair. 🙂

Superdrug own brand - can usually get two for £7. Best hair dye out there. I go for ash brown.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 21/12/2017 15:05

I don’t have grey roots I have dark brown roots and bright red hair have for years. I couldn’t get my normal dye in time for Christmas bought one grom pound world and my roots are gone. I have never used a die that I didn’t need to bleach my roots first.

Deathraystare · 21/12/2017 19:13

I have been using the one in Holland and Barrett - I think called Colour tint/nature tine in a bright red shade and despite the fact that reds fade quick it has been good. However they did not have the colour in I wanted so forced to get one from L'oreal - cannot remember the title - hold on.....

L'oreal prefernce (£6 at moment). I don't do it myself. So I don't know yet how long it lasts but apparently it has fade resistant technology or something. The hairdresser gave me the aftercare tubes that came with the pack.

All I can say is this time around I left my hair colouring off for quite a while due to finances (though was only £15 with own hair colour packet) so loads of grey to cover up this time. Lovely bright red shade!!!

I also have dark brown hair. I found greys would turn and orangey colour after a few weeks, when I was colouring my hair, so now I've had a few random highlights put in. They are very thin and subtle and you can tell which bits are grey when they grow out. I don't have a huge amount of grey, most of it is around the front.

HeyMacWey · 21/12/2017 21:18

Another recommendation for majirel.
If you use a creme peroxide is even easier to apply as no drips.

They also do a majirouge range which would be perfect for you deathraystare

For years I've just used the £1.98 Schwarzkopf medium brown from Wilkos to do my roots. I have to touch up every 2 weeks and it costs a fortune when I go to salon. I use a proper hairdressers touch up brush and get my dd to do the back. It looks fine.

I just do my roots and let the hairdresser do the foils at the front - it's seriously fine, just do it!

ScreamingValentaMySantaExpress · 21/12/2017 21:23

I use henna and indigo, similar to @RavingRoo's mum. Lush 'Brun' or 'Marron' are pre-mixed henna and indigo dyes, or you can buy both as powder and mix your own. It leaves your hair in great condition! The only downside is that it's messier than ammonia/peroxide based dye and has to be left on the head longer, so more time-consuming.
