Thoughts on Mint Velvet

I've never been in there before as always thought it way out of my budget.
Popped in today as sale on & really liked lots of things. Still quite pricey for me even in sale but I treated myself to a lovely jumper.
The clothes just seemed to be really nice quality so just wondered what other people thought of them.

I have very few nice clothes and what I do have is quite old & tired looking. I normally buy from much lower priced shops and the clothes don't last well.

Am thinking perhaps in 2018 I should try spending a little more to have a few really nice things as opposed to lots of tat! Anyone else do this and does it work well?

I think that Phase Eight often does similar stuff to Mint Velvet, but slightly cheaper?

Formeressexgirl · 20/12/2017 22:06

Boden is great when they have 20% off (often) or get some good basics from Uniqlo. Jigsaw, pricey but good for sale shopping.

taytotayto111 · 20/12/2017 22:29

Honey You would be amazed how soon people put current stock on eBay but generally I now know what size in what shop will fit me and I go for current if I can or last season and I only look for new as some people's idea of hardly worn would shock you. I save a fortune doing this.

Caulk · 20/12/2017 22:34

I buy a lot in mint velvet. I’m a short size 10/12 and find I have to get a small or extra small but then it’s fine. Always happy with the quality although a lot is handwash only.

Honey1975 · 20/12/2017 22:42

Caulk yes the jumper I bought today was hand wash only which slightly bothers me as I never hand wash anything! Would it be ok on a 15 delicate cycle do you reckon?

Tayto that's interesting, might have to have another look. I think I'd rather just buy new too rather than used or hardly worn.

My mum buys loads from Mint Velvet. She’s early 70s, petite, but with a bit of an apple shaped tummy - she always looks amazing, but the clothes are not really my cup of tea personally.

MaudlinMews · 20/12/2017 22:58

How about All Saints?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 20/12/2017 23:05

I like some of their stuff - knitwear and bags especially . I think it’s a less frump version of Phase Eight and I like greys and blacks.
One of our work directors used to wear the more high fashion pieces from Cos . Always a bit weird looking but I think I’ll look for myself now !

EnidButton · 20/12/2017 23:35

I have a bag from there which I love. I think the accessories look really nice.

Had a jumper from there a few years ago. Thin but warm, Gorgeous pale orange colour, figure hugging and a low scooped neck. So no frumpiness or drowning. It didn't wash that well though. Went bobbly.

I think it's like anywhere, you can pick out really good items even if the whole brand doesn't seem to be one you'd go for.

EnidButton · 20/12/2017 23:37

(I'm 36 and size 10 btw if that helps)

EnidButton · 20/12/2017 23:40

And yes to getting quality over quantity. I started doing that after a big declutter where I got rid of a lot of clothes. I find it means you choose more carefully so you end up with things that go with a lot of other things in your wardrobe rather than lots of mismatched items that you don't know how to wear.

You might like Hush if you like MV.

Caulk · 20/12/2017 23:49

I wash stuff on a cold wash. I don’t know the temperature but it’s under Wool Wash on the machine. I use Wool detergent too but it always is fine

FuckyNellYaBastad · 20/12/2017 23:56

I like jigsaw

CountFosco · 21/12/2017 06:39

I think MV is OK for curves, I'm 5'2" and a size 10 (with 30FF boobs so very much an hourglass) so similar size to you. I have a couple of jumpers/tops that wash OK but you need to size down. Jeans on the other hand I found needed to size up although to be fair I think the dimensions on the website are accurate. Oh, and they do petite jeans so that's a plus. I wouldn't say it's frumpy but it is aimed at an older clientele than its sister brand All Saints.

Boden are good for smart casual work clothes if you avoid the frumpy patterns and they do a good range of petite clothes so I've bought a lot of trousers there in the past and they are still my first choice for cashmere. Quality has gone down a lot though for some basics. Never buy unless you have at least 20% off.

COS is fantastic quality for the cost but you need to be able to look past the styling if you are buying from the website. The simplest tops are beautifully cut. Their sales only happen twice a year but are proper sales so worth waiting for.

You'd probably like Hush if you like MV. They cut well but the quality of the knitwear is slated on here. Their jersey is good and I love their jeans. Don't discount a lot but have 10% off at the beginning of the season and then the sale after Christmas.

Uniqlo good quality and cheap all the time.

10thingsIhateAboutTheDailyMail · 21/12/2017 07:50

MV were great years ago, when everything was natural fibres....but more poly/acrylic now. No longer like their clothes

Then Hush was great, just natural fibres.... but no longer, have had no success this year

Boden: great if you have no hips/straight up and down figure, but I look all wrong

Cos makes me look like a Soviet Librarian

Seasalt makes me look like an outsuze toddler

Phase Eight makes me look like mother of the bride

Fatface makes me look like a deluded ex_hippie who still thinks she is 25

All Saints is great for my 5ft3 size six friends (but I am 6ft size 14)

Jigsaw have been doing the same for a decade .... and are ££££, I look like I come straight out of the 90s

I am in a clothes grump!!!!

Badweekjustgotworse · 21/12/2017 08:21

10things 'soviet librarian... I was just looking through their site and that nails the impresssion I was getting. I really WANT to luke it, but nope, leaves me cold

I love jigsaw clothes, but I have a long back so find everything too short waisted on me. Warehouse clothes for me really well though so that's my go to if I want to buy something new and don't have much time.

I agree with pp about finding a a shop that you know you like and that fits you well and sticking to that on eBay, just buying random stuff in your size is the way straight to the charity shop!

Might have to check out jaeger on eBay, always liked the quality of their tailoring but never bought anything.

TossDaily · 21/12/2017 09:49

I like the stuff on the hangers, but to me the cut is skimped and the clothes just don't suit me.

TheOtherGirl · 21/12/2017 10:49

I like Jigsaw but it is so over priced. I refuse to pay £60 for a long sleeved t-shirt.

ExConstance · 21/12/2017 11:09

I sometimes buy my favourite brands on ebay, it is a bit hit and miss but I have had a lovely 100% cashmere Jaeger jumper dress for £50 this winter that has been much admired. I find that if I buy Whistles, Toast Brora Jigsaw or similar dresses or knitwear in the sale or when there is a good reduction on offer I can wear them for as long as I want and when I'm read to replace I get about 1/2 of what I paid back for them on ebay. I've just sold off a few items for £200 and the money from those will go towards something from Toast in the January Sale. I have far too many clothes and I'm hoping that over a period of time I will have less but better.

MummywithaTummy2017 · 21/12/2017 11:21

I've had quality issues with their trousers - the fabric was soft so really comfy but they frayed at the hems really quickly. Agree the colour palette is limited but they often do peplum styles which really flatter my tum
