Anyone fancy helping me get my style back in the New Year?

New Year, new me - I say it every year and somehow never do it.

I've recently started running so I have the 'get fitter' bit in hand, but I seem to have lost my way with my look. I have my hair cut and coloured every 6/8 weeks, my nails are normally done - shortish with neutral colour, I normally wear a little bit of make up, simple jewellery; but I always feel like I just miss looking 'done'. Like I'm playing dress up or something.

I favour muted tones especially greys and taupes and I think maybe I'm just a but 'dull'. Someone made a comment at a night out the other day that I 'obviously don't like to stand out', which is probably true, but it made me feel that I'm practically invisible.

So tell me ladies and gents, how do I get some 'oomph' about me?

Shameless bumpage here. Smile

I'd go for more colour and patterns and try to pick things outside of your comfort zone, also neutral nails are terribly boring!!!

Wilburissomepig · 20/12/2017 17:56

When I say neutral, I mean one colour rather than a lot of the nail art/pointy nails that seem to be around these days. Usually a berry or nude ish shade, which yes is pretty boring I guess! Grin

I don't think you sound boring at all OP
(But I know nothing)

Whiterabbitears · 20/12/2017 18:07

You sound quite polished to me! Maybe a splash of colour? A colleague of mine is polished and she wears neutrals but adds interest with a coloured bag, scarf and nails. She also wears bright coloured crystal type studs which I know doesnt sound great but it just adds a touch of colour near her face whilst remaining subtle. I need some colour otherwise I feel boring and non descript.

AnaViaSalamanca · 20/12/2017 18:25

I second the opinion that you sound polished already and maybe add some color (shoes?).

Also, in my personal opinion, looking "done" is a bit dated. Looking slightly "undone" as if you just threw something together is much better.

Wilburissomepig · 20/12/2017 18:33

Ana I would love to be able to carry off the slightly undone look, because I'm quite an undone person at the best of times, but my 'undone' is more 'bag lady' that casual chic. Grin

I think I do need more colour - I love coloured shoes and have some lovely wine coloured boots. I don't know, I just feel a bit plain and old. I'm 51 now and have a bit more time to myself than I used to when the DC's were tiny, so I suppose I want to make more of an effort.

pictures?

What colouring do you have? How old are you? What size are you? Which celebrity’s style do you admire?

Atalune · 20/12/2017 19:25

I think you sound incredibly chic.

Atalune · 20/12/2017 19:30

But it might be that a couple of little details might help you look a little edgier?

For example if you wear a shirt have it buttoned all the way up to look a bit androgynous.

If you are wearing ankle boots and slim trousers then have a tiny bit of skin showing or stick a glittery sock on.

Nice big warm woollen coat on in a grey/navy or black. Pair it with a grey scarf with a neon stripe or one if the large blanket scarves from the high streets with some mustard or teal.

Little details like that can really lift an outfit.

Wilburissomepig · 20/12/2017 19:34

No pictures! Grin

I'm 51, size 12-14 (I do need to lose at least a stone as I'm only 5'2) coppery/blonde hair.

Women in the public eye who I think are stylish? Cate Blanchett, Blake Lively, Diane Kruger, Rachel Weiss.

Sorry, I thought you meant nude, French polish or pale pinks. I love berry coloured nails! 😳

BlueEyedWonder · 20/12/2017 20:11

I think I dress a bit like you OP. I call it understated Grin
I add interest to my plain outfits with a scarf - tartan in muted shades or leopard print. Or coloured shoes / boots for a night out - I have a red pair.
I recently bought a black spot print dress. I’m not usually a fan of pattern but this is quite subtle.
A brightly coloured bag is also a good option.

JaceLancs · 20/12/2017 21:08

I’m a similar age to you and dress quietly - by that I mean few patterns bar an occasional stripe
Classic shapes and suit mainly greys black and navy
I do liven it up a bit with bright pieces such as a cerise cashmere cardigan over a black skinny polo and black trousers
Apparently I’m known for my jewellery and nails
Last training course I ran even mentioned it on a feedback form (in a positive way)

JaceLancs · 20/12/2017 21:09

I also go for slightly different footwear - more of a pointed toe or funky colour or detail like mock croc edging on a pair of plain black flats
