I am in desperate need of a coat for walking in, and after multiple trips to the shops i am still no closer to finding one. (difficult as I have a new shape after giving birth 6 months ago)

I think I have narrowed it down to these two:

www.mintvelvet.co.uk/product/black-knit-lined-waxed-parka/12109

OR

www.craghoppers.com/inga-jacket-charcoal/

They work out at the same price roughly as I have a voucher for MV.

Im 5ft 4 and now a curvy pear shape

Bit confused OP. You say "for walking in" but where do you intend to walk to?

The bus? Or on rugged hills with sideways rain?

We need a bit more information to go on!

The craghoppers one will definitely be more weatherproof. I have a lighter, snuggly jacket a similar weight to the mint velvet one and it's great on days like today when it's chilly but might as well be a t-shirt, faced with an icy northerly wind. I have a serious parka that doesn't let anything in, including wind and it's so much warmer and drier.

Killerfairy · 19/12/2017 19:44

The second thicker one!!
It's because the model is wearing boring clothes rjstvit looks boring.

If you had a nice woolly hat and assesories, wore it with hoody ect it would look much younger

And it looks bloody warmer.

MikeUniformMike · 19/12/2017 19:45

I'd get the Craghopper one because it says it is waterproof and the MV doesn't.

festivedinosaur · 19/12/2017 21:04

Crab hopper one definitley more practical.

Due to change in shape I don't have any winter jackets that fit.

I have a lovely smart jacket and good quality wet weather gear for hiking.
I'm hoping one day I fit into them again which is why I don't really want to buy two new coats.

My thoughts are that I may not need the level of wet weather gear as I used to need.
We would do a lot of winter hiking, but now with a baby, we still like to do it, but avoid it when the forecast is firmly heavy downpours.

So maybe I could get away with a waxed jacket like the MV?

The craghoppers will stay dry for sure, but will I feel even slightly stylish day to day?

Generally I will be wearing the coat for everything across this winter, from walks into town and around the shops, to evenings out, to winter walks

I loooove that Ilse Jacobsen one.

Lucked · 19/12/2017 21:29

I have the Ilse Jacobson coat and it is much admired BUT it is not a warm coat it is a raincoat with no padding, the material has a thin fleece backing but it doesn't compare to the coats posted in the OP. I haven't had mine on since October although now I have lost weight I might get an ultra light down gillet for under it.

Atalune · 19/12/2017 21:36

Don’t buy the craghopper one for a day to day jacket. It’s way too unstylish.

Atalune · 19/12/2017 21:37

The isle Jacobson one would be very good with a slim little body warmer under it.

Get that one!!!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 19/12/2017 22:09

The draw back with the isle Jacobson coat is that it's way more expensive than the others (Op has a mv voucher) is a raincoat so not warm and it's totally out of stock.

I'm guessing that the proportion of time you'll actually be out hiking compared to wearing it everyday is tiny. On that basis, go for the one you like the look of. You can get a cheap practical raincoat in the sales for the odd mountain climb in the rain.

Tantpoke · 19/12/2017 23:46

I bought a Craghopper coat a couple of years ago from TKMaxx it has a zippable inner lining, it pretty much is my go to coat in this weather, and I have a lot of coats.

When it comes down to it none are really as suitable in this weather than my Craghopper.

I think if the coats were both worn by the slimmer taller MV model they would look pretty identical tbh.

GrrrHotdogs · 19/12/2017 23:55

I think you can't tell without trying them on. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't usually like mint velvet but that cost is nice.

Ididnthearanything · 20/12/2017 10:15

My friend bought the Mint Velvet a few weeks ago. It's v nice. She also has an Ilse Jacobsen coat, and she says its fine for rain but that's it, no heat in it. Every other woman around here has an Ilse Jacobsen coat, it's like a badge of school-run graduation or something. The ubiqitousness (is that a word) of them puts me off.

Size wise she's a 14-16 pear shape and definitely needed the size 16.

Vitalogy · 20/12/2017 10:40

Mint Velvet.

Lovingtyrells · 20/12/2017 16:38

Barbour one instead !

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 22/12/2017 23:40

I've really fallen for that Mint Velvet coat.
Anyone know if they usually reduce stuff further after Xmas?
I'm a bit of a tightwad and don't want to spend over £100...
