Hair dyeing advice needed.

My daughter who has short dark brown hair would really like to experiment with a new colour. She's thinking something along the purple or blue line. We spoke to a hairdresser last week about it but it is prohibitively expensive as she had initially wanted pastel colours and it would be a lot of work. So she is now open to other ideas. Anyone got any advice? Thanks.

Is her hair dyed at the moment?

catclarks · 13/12/2017 15:57

No. This will be her first time.

If she's looking at something that drastic and is naturally dark brown then it will probably have to be bleached first as colours like that won't show on dark hair.
How old is your daughter? Superdrug used to do spray on colours that washed out. She could try a few different colours maybe and see what she liked.

What about buying hair chalks to experiment with a try colours before bleaching?

catclarks · 13/12/2017 20:28

Thanks all. My daughter is 14 but needs a bit of a boost at the moment so I'm happy for her to dye her hair. I'm just not so keen on her having to bleach it first. However if that's ultimately what she has to do then so be it.

She already has hair chalks but wants something a bit more permanent. In the meantime I'll maybe get a couple of the wash out ones to see what she thinks.

The XXL ones should be good on her hair but they are permanent and I don't know how she will get on at school with then? If she has bleach on her hair it's really going to damage it.

Tbh, if she needs a boost and you could afford it I would send her to a salon. I only say this as I got some 'blue' highlights in as a teen by a backstreet hairdresser that ended up green and i got a lot of stick for it.

If she doesn't go for a pastel it shouldn't cost anywhere near as much. Could be part of her Christmas present?

Something like this could be nice

I was looking at mystic violet.

GreyFluffball · 13/12/2017 20:34

Just a thought but what is her school's policy on non-natural hair colour? All the things you've mentioned are permanent colours and it would be a shame to go through all the work of getting a nice colour only to have to change it back.

catclarks · 14/12/2017 08:11

Strangely, the school have a strict uniform policy but are quite liberal with hair so it won't be a problem. I am trying to encourage a darker colour so that she won't need her hair bleached. I like the mystic violet. I'll get her to take a look. Thanks for the pointers.

DD was keen to try, so here is mystic violet in all its glory. She loves it (and it didn't cost the earth!) so everyone's happy. Thanks for all the advice.

That's gorgeous and really looks like itsuits your dds style. Hope she likes.

ToftheB · 14/12/2017 21:25

It looks great! And much healthier than if it had been bleached. I’m glad she’s pleased Smile
