"No 'poo" - not washing your hair

I'm really tempted to try this, has anyone done it?
How long do you have to wait for the greasiness to start improving?
I've unintentionally not washed my hair for 13 days, although I have used dry shampoo and it probably has plaster dust in it too. I'd rather start off with it clean before I do it.
Any advice?

I've done it. It was a couple of years ago and I stopped washing my hair for almost a year. The first month or so was not easy, however it did then suddenly improve and you would never have known.
I eventually went back to washing it as I simply missed the smell and feeling of shampooed hair, but i still benefit from it now as my hair takes well over a week to get greasy, so I barely wash my hair once a week.
Go for it :)

I co wash; I didn’t like no wash in the summer after the gym or equally after swimming.

I try to leave it a week if I can, normally. And I use "low 'poo" shampoo on it when I do. I got a hemp one from Holland & Barrett that free from all the bad chemicals.
I don't have a customer facing job normally, so I could get away with having greasy hair (it normally is anyway lol)

I wash mine with a SLS free shampoo about once a week (could probably do it less - but I quite enjoy a bit of lather occasionally, and it means I don't have to worry about getting fancy, build up free styling products) and then just refresh it by wetting and 'co-washing' with silicone free conditioner every couple of days. I only need to do the co-washing because my hair is curly and it loses it's definition and turns to frizz after a couple of days of sleeping on it and fiddling with it.

If you're going to stop washing with products entirely, I would do a 'clarifying' wash with a 'cone free, SLS based shampoo (or soap or shower gel) first. I've got a friend who's been just rinsing with water for a couple of months - and it smells ok but does look pretty greasy...

My hair is normally very dry at the ends but gets greasy within a few days at the roots. I generally play with it quite a bit and it's wavy/curlyish and fine but a lot of it.

For my hair, it took about 4/5 weeks for the greasiness to be more manageable but this was with scritching/preening every night (I did sometimes miss a night). I wouldn't have been able to get through it without this and I wouldn't advise it as you really need to move the oils through. Also, I had to watch the temperature of the shower otherwise it became horrendous (when I had time, I'd have a hot shower and work it all through after - this wasn't realistic every day though).

If you do try it, your best friends are French plaits and messy buns. Also, if you're going to do it, really look into it so that it works and doesn't turn into a science experiment on your head (eg if you leave conditioner in before you start, you will get very sticky hair - you'd never realise how much general lint there is around until it sticks in your hair!). And don't forget it's your scalp too.

Sorry that was long Blush
Basically, if you really want to do it and do it properly, research research research!

When I first did it, i shampooed and conditioned before I started, then I just used water (and sometimes oil as a leave in). Main problem was the weird grey lint stage, but it passes. As long as you keep combs and brushes very clean (wash them in shampoo!) you shouldn’t have any weird smell or anything.

DON’T use baking soda, it’s alkaline and really bad for your hair. Better to use shampoo than that!

Ollivander84 · 13/12/2017 13:47

Yep. I did my final wash with a sls shampoo (no silicones in)
Now I only use conditioners that are curly girl safe and same for styling products. I wash with conditioner, then condition and apply my products to soaking wet hair
It was a lot of reading ingredients at first but I've worked out what my hair likes
