Skin care for 10 year old?

DD is nearly 10. She is starting to get a few spots and the skin on her cheeks feels rough. At the moment she only uses water on her face. Should she be using cleanser and moisturiser? What is best for young skin?

My 10 year old uses micellar water wipes and uses Nivea moisturiser in the morning. Then just washes her face with water on the night. She has used that for about 6 months and her skin is now fine. When spots appear she puts a bit of Savlon on.

My 10 year old's skin has started changing. I've started her on Eucerin cream cleanser for sensitive skin. She massages it in and removes it with a damp flannel then adds a touch of Simple moisturising lotion. I follow Caroline Hirons so I'm keen on hot cloth cleansing rather than wipes.

I was cleansing, toning with cold water, and moisturizing at that age. Simple foaming cleanser, done twice, then tone with cold water, the follow with a moisturizer of your choice.

Thank you. I will see if I can find a gentle cleanser and moisturiser for her.

This is the cleanser that my daughter uses. m.feelunique.com/p/Eucerin-DermatoCLEAN-Mild-Cleansing-Milk-200ml Avene is also an excellent brand which is often on offer at Boots. My daughter has sensitive skin so I wanted to use very gentle products on her. Foaming cleansers can be drying. Avene also has a range for oily/blemished skin which is gentle.

@Housewife2010 are wipes bad? Even micellar ones? I always thought hot towel cleansing over a period of time can be bad for capillaries so when she is older she will get the little red marks

I think hot cloth cleansing is fine as long as water isn't too hot or she's too vigorous with the flannel. My daughter has a little keratosis pilaris on her cheeks so i think the slight exfoliation is good for that.

I'd use a flannel with a cleanser like simple or witch hazel. I don't think her age changes the advice that much though tbh. Also a moisturiser with SPF.

I was using cleanser, toner & moisturiser at 10. If I'd known sunblock prevented a lot of aging I'd have used sunblock too.

DD will definitely use sun block from April to October. I don’t think she needs it over winter.

I think I will try her with simple cleanser and a flannel, followed by moisturiser and see how that goes.

The UVA is present all year. The very first article I read about it was in Harper's & Queen by Newby Hands & the dermatologist said their hypothesis was that it was the drip drip drip effect of daily exposure that did the damage more so than the two weeks abroad. I do my neck and chest too.

Your not going to make vitamin d in the winter in this country as the UVb rays aren't strong enough at the moment so there's nothing to gain by leaving it off.

The only day I haven't worn a sunblock outside in 18 years was my wedding day because it would have interfered with flash photography.

You do need a double cleanse to remove it though, I'm using grape seed oil from simple but I'll switch to organic pressed with Vit E when it runs out as that's cheaper.

Fluffycloud - do you mind if I ask what moisturiser with SPF do you use?
My dd who is 11 cleanses every night with micellar water and while she has had the occasional spot, I think this is helping to keep her skin clear. Haven't started her with moisturiser yet but would like to soon.

Housewife2010 · 14/12/2017 09:43

My 10 year old uses Simple Light Moisturiser with SPF 15.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/12/2017 10:02

I don't use SPF in moisturiser, I use 50spf in a la Roche posay sunscreen for oily skin. I started off using loreal & garnier SPF 50 when I was young.

UVA protection was only just coming into it then & some SPF 50 only had 3 star protection not 5 but those two had 5 star UVA.

The lrp sunblock has infra red protection too, that's fairly new.
