Make up palette recommendations

Never been much of a make up wearer but realised today I do need to buy some decent basics.

So looking for a moderately priced palette of eyeshadows but don't know where to start. Am blonde with hazel eyes so need a basic colour range to compliment my tones.

Any brand/product recommendations gratefully received.

For decent basics I highly recommend the urban decay naked palettes, especially the first two. That's for neutrals you can create lots of natural, nude, smokey and subtle looks with.

If you want something that is more exciting, like bold colours, try a sleek palette, which are cheaper and have good colour payoff.

The most crucial thing is an eyelid primer. Absolutely essential for your eyeshadow to stay. I use the urban decay one, have done for years, but if anyone can suggest one that's cheaper and works well then you may not need to spend that much!

Auspiciouspanda · 11/12/2017 19:12

I wouldn't suggest any naked palettes if you don't have many other matte shades to supplement them. Way to many shimmers.

I would suggest Nyx palettes as they have the quality of urban decay but with better shade range.

Auspiciouspanda · 11/12/2017 19:13

The nyx ultimates palettes sorry. The warm neutrals is gorg.

I’m a makeup addict and obsessed with eyeshadow I have a lot of eyeshadow palettes! Really it depends on your budget. The violet voss ride or die palette is brilliant but quite pricey at about £70. Charlotte tilbury palettes are good but with only four shades there’s not much you can do with them. I love the naked palettes and have them all, the ones I use most are naked 2 and the new naked heat. Morphe palettes are really good and are well priced at about £25 they have a lot of different shades and a mix of matte and shimmers and the pigmentation is pretty good. I second the op who said to use a primer I also use the urban decay primer potion it’s great!

My DD loves the morphe palettes. I don't know specific ones but I'm sure she mentioned 350 or some thing!

HappyHoppy · 12/12/2017 08:08

The Urban Decay Naked Basics palettes (there are 2) may be suitable - 6 neutral colours each, no shimmery shit. I got one reduced at Debenhams this weekend for less than £20, and am pleased (as an eyeshadow newbie)

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 12/12/2017 08:36

If you're not much into makeup then im not sure I'd go for the urban decay palletes. They're a lot of money to spend to potentially not use them. I'd reccomend looking at makeup revolution available in Superdrug. They have good colour payoff and are very reasonably priced. The iconic palettes are neutral shades and a good.mix of.mattes and shimmer and only £4. I reach for them more than I do my naked pallete.

violetbunny · 12/12/2017 08:58

I would go into MAC and get a sales assistant help you create a custom palette just for you. I have a few of the 4-pan and 15-pan custom palettes and they are awesome.

Raisinbrain · 12/12/2017 09:08

I bought my first grown up palette recently at the age of 33, it's one of the urban decay naked basics and I luffs it so. I watched a couple of YouTube tutorials on how to use the colours. It's perfect for every day.

NameChanger22 · 12/12/2017 09:17

I have lots of makeup palettes - most of the ones by Urban Decay, lots by Too Faced, MAC, Clinque, Stilla, Pixi, plus lots of cheaper brands. I collect them.

My favourite, by far, is Etude House - I have five different ones and I love the colours, quality and packaging. They usually cost around £13 or £14 on Ebay. My second favourite after these would be Chocolate Bar by Too Faced.

NathalieM · 18/12/2017 16:12

The Naked palettes are always a good shout, they are really pigmented, and the colours are just beautiful. However, as FormerlyFrikadela01 said, these palettes are pricey for just starting out and experimenting. I brought a cheaper eyeshadow palette from Autograph, M&S and for £15 the colours, pigment and coverage were on par with the Naked palettes.

ImSoExhausted · 18/12/2017 16:20

Morphe Palettes are AMAZING. It's absolutely huge with a few colour schemes to choose from, also much much cheaper than Urban Decay.
They're raved about by the beauty community and I prefer to use mine over my Urban Decay/Stila/Smashbox palettes

Vote for Revolution and Mua palettes here

SparklyLights · 18/12/2017 22:56

Can really recommend the Maybelline palettes, in particular the Blushed Nudes for your colouring.

I have all the Maybelline eyeshadow palettes and find them very good value for money, good shades, go on nicely etc. I have far more expensive ones but I think those ones stand up to the high end palettes especially for everyday wear.

Deathraystare · 19/12/2017 10:39

If you are really not sure then don't waste your money, some of those palettes mentioned are ££. Why not try Sleek or MUA from Superdrug. They have some very nice neutrals and if you don't like all the colours it hasn't cost ££.

Deathraystare · 19/12/2017 10:40

Or make up revolution. The ones I mentioned I think are under a tenner.

lauramcr · 19/12/2017 11:12

I can’t believe people still recommend naked palettes- they’re severely outdated at this point and need to be reworked. There are so many better options in 2017/8.

My favourite palettes are ABH MR and Huda’s. In your case I would buy a Morphe palette eg 35O2, Jaclyn hill etc.

www.morphebrushes.com/collections/eyeshadow-palettes

They are available in the uk but sell out really quickly. You’ll also be able to find 100s of tutorials on YouTube to help you discover looks

LemonShark · 19/12/2017 11:18

lauramcr Why do the naked pale teen need to be reworked? And what makes you think they're outdated?

I have naked 1 & 2 and they're about eight years old I think, they're still going strong and exceptional quality. I understand beginners might not need to spend that type of money on a palette but the nakeds are great. Brilliant quality, lovely colour selection, last forever. They're classics, nothing wrong with that!

LemonShark · 19/12/2017 11:26

*palettes not pale teen haha

whiteonesugar · 19/12/2017 13:16

Morphe defo, I use mine loads!
