Lagenlook makes me look like a medieval peasant

I'm plus size and love the floaty bohemian look. I'm 36 and 6 ft so I ordered a couple of tunics but when I tried them on all I saw was a medieval peasant Sad. Where am I going wrong? I like the natural fibres but is it the colours? (Drab) do any of you wear Lagenlook and actually look floaty and bohemian and if you do how do you do it?

I love lagenlook and agree with floisme that it takes a lot of thought... not all lagenlook garments are equal.. for example, I would never buy harems from any British designers, as they all seem to be the wrong shape, namely the I’m-wearing-a-big-nappy look. Good harems have been restyled to a different silhouette, with more fabric on the leg to balance out the bum.. good examples are dairi and tienda ho.
Unfortunately, they cost the earth and then you get postage and customs duty on top..
Similarly, the cut of the lagenlook tunics needs to be considered.. as an hourglass, I need at least a nod to the waist, rather than the straighter tunic - but too much waist indentation looks wrong, too! Unless you use the shorter overgarment, which is often floaty or sheer, or a lagenlook waistcoat.
Having said all that, I am in my 60s, with no pretension to either fashion or high style, and I wear lagenlook because it is comfortable and suits my vaguely boho persona, without hopefully going into mediaeval peasant or bag lady territory. Smile

I have a lagenlook jumper but it just like a normal jumper on me at the moment as I’m 19 weeks pregnant and huge.

MaybeDoctor · 11/12/2017 09:47

I was grew up in the days of hippy/grunge, love a flowing skirt and have had quite a long and meaningful relationship with tunics, but even I draw the line at Lagenlook. I think that you have to be 'artistic', or possibly an actor, to pull it off! Grin

I have curly hair and quite a natural look, so I find that these days I need something quite structured and crisp to balance it out.

Maverick, your daughter is in her 70s? Go you!

Mulberrysilk · 11/12/2017 12:55

Lagenlook makes everyone look like a medieval peasant - which is fine, if medieval peasant is the look your going for.

Whiterabbitears · 11/12/2017 13:06

Flumplet it would definitely make good maternity wear!

It is comfortable and I am the queen of comfort over style so I dont always trust my judgement on my image, as I always buy stuff for just around the house and then end up wearing it absolutely everywhere because its so comfy Confused I then end up looking like a drab scruff.

I tried on an M&S blue jumpsuit once - Soviet Tractor Factory worker would probably sum up the look...

Whiterabbitears · 11/12/2017 18:53

Grin its so depressing isn't it? Which is worse, peasant or factory worker?

I'm tall enough to wear it (5ft 7") but am cursed with 34FF norks so look like Brunehilde. All I need is a horned helmet.

FaFoutis · 11/12/2017 19:04

I aim for medieval peasant. If it doesn't look like goblins made it then I won't wear it.
I wouldn't touch tunics though, they are too 'white stuff' for me.

I wear lagenlook dresses (maybe two at a time) with a very wide belt and lace up boots. Usually sleeveless dress with tight long sleeved top underneath - sleeves have to go over my hands. Also have a coat that looks like an old blanket I found in a ditch.

Whiterabbitears · 11/12/2017 19:16

Yes big of nork here also, I could be Brunehilde too. And yes I too like the ethereal fairy goblin look. Maybe I should just sod it and wear it anyway?

I think that, with Lagenlook, we have to get beyond the 'flattering' mindset. We're trained to show off our curves, emphasise our slimness - or, at the very least, our slimmer bits. It's really quite liberating not to worry about whether you have those things and whether you are advertising them to the world.

I like wearing my shorter ones with either jeans or leggings. I don't like wearing them with wide, swishy trousers, because I feel swamped in fabric. I like a long, drapey jacket or cardie over them, or a close-fitting t-shirt under.

I don't like belting them, as that seems to be against the point of all that loose fabric. Plus, under all that loose stuff, who knows whether or not you have a waist? Belt it, and it's obvious.

ArcheryAnnie · 11/12/2017 19:31

I've just looked up Lagenlook and know I'd just look like a total baggage with all that on, as it's too artfully messy. It's the sort of outfit that looks fantastic when you are 5'10", 25, and have no boobs, bum or body fat.

It's like Toast clothes. I like them - though I coudn't afford them - but would never wear them. (And someone pointed out on twitter that Toast is basically "Tenko - the fashion".)

ArcheryAnnie · 11/12/2017 19:35

That said, I do like it when I see people wearing the clothes that they are not "supposed" to, and looking fab anyway, because they just have the confidence to pull it off. (I do not have this confidence, alas.)

polyhymnia · 11/12/2017 19:46

Tall and (very large) hourglass here and, though I do like some boho looks, definitely in the anti Lagenlook camp personally. Would definitely look Brunnhilde-esque.

Hate anything that just drops from my big bust and gives the ship in full sail effect. Must have some definition.
Tbh, have never really understood its appeal to large people, but obviously some people on here make it work for them. Does sound a lot of/ too much for me effort to do so, though.

Whiterabbitears · 11/12/2017 22:41

I'm feeling reassured that I'm not alone here. I've not actually seen anyone else in real life wearing Lagenlook or resembling a medieval peasant so as all you folks say, its a hard look to carry off. I'm not feeling quite as bad now Smile
