Handcreams

Looking for handcream suggestions please.

I work with fabric, so that grabs all the oil out of my hands drying them out more than normal. It also means I can't use a greasy handcream.

The skin round my nails can crack really painfully, and sometimes I get mild infections (complete with oozing) in those cracks so they're obviously quite deep. Otherwise, hands are horrible - dry, flaky, peeling and sore. Bloody bloody sore.

I've tried loads of creams and whilst they all work to some degree, I'm applying them ten to twenty times a day. I can't have greasy hands for my work, I just can't, as I work with bridal wear.

I'd love some suggestions please. Budget is pretty flexible.

The Neutrogena one is pretty good at soaking in, especially if you don't use too much in one go. It's the least greasy one I have, but works a treat.

Try intensive overnight treatments, maybe - get a pair of cotton gloves and ladle on the cream before you go to bed.

BoredOnMatLeave · 08/12/2017 13:21

I know nothing about how you make bridal wear but could you wear tight plastic gloves?

If not as PP said one of those overnight treatments

AnnMumsnet · 08/12/2017 13:21

Try www.okeeffescompany.com/ - not greasy.
Also watching as my hands are awful. OKeeffes has helped a bit but its a horrid cycle for me..

Lakeland used to do one that you could use when sewing.
I think it is this one

Boots Protect and Perfect has worked wonders for me. I get the one in the blue tube

peppykoala · 08/12/2017 13:32

La Roche Posay Lipikar or one of the Roger & Gallet ones (the R&G ones smell amazing & sink in faster than any others I've tried).

peppykoala · 08/12/2017 13:39

And have you tried any cuticle treatments for around your nails? I love the Mavala cream, and the Dior one is supposed to be really good.

Bitsy1968 · 08/12/2017 17:57

thanks everyone. I'll try some of these!

Neutrogena is the best hand cream I have used. It never gives allergies to me and its the one for me.

LemonShark · 08/12/2017 19:06

Soap and glory hand food sinks in so well.

I got a really decent one from Waitrose. It was quite cheap and has lasted along time. I cannot remember the exact name, but it is for gardeners? I have ezema on my hands and it did not react which is always positive.

Melfish · 08/12/2017 20:34

I use Herbacin Kamille hand cream. My local chemist stocks it- it is very moisturising and non greasy. I also get Snowfire from the same chemist which is an ointment in stick form and use it on the cracks on my fingertips. That one is a little greasy but you could use it in the evening. Both are inexpensive.

laramara · 08/12/2017 21:33

La Roche Posay Cicaplast handcream is a revelation, it's a barrier cream and has worked wonders on my hands really impressed!

LockedOutOfMN · 08/12/2017 23:51

I like Molton brown. Very moisturing but not greasy or heavy at all.

I've also got a pair of hand masks which are silicon gloves infused with moisturiser
10-12 uses, not expensive, from Natura. There are also single use ones but I don't like the idea of the waste (feel bad enough about the ones I've got).

PickAChew · 08/12/2017 23:52

Something with urea. I have a massive bottle of flexitol body lotion.

JollyGiraffe · 09/12/2017 00:00

Okeeffes as recommended above!

I work in healthcare and wash my hands about 50 times a day, and also have eczema. It is amazing and gentle and doesn't smell!

The best I have tried by far, having tried many on the market, due to very dry skin which splits apart and bleeds, is Palmers Coconut Oil hand cream, white squeezy tube with brown base - £2.50.
It's thick enough to be effective which many 'intensive' hand creams really really aren't. Smells good as well.
However, I also keep pots of the blue Nivea Creme around - that's much more greasy but is good for overnight.

MikeUniformMike · 10/12/2017 18:29

One thought Bitsy is to use soap instead of handwash.

ButteredScone · 10/12/2017 22:50

I have spent £££ trying out loads and the best is... Boots Hand and Nail £2.

Honestly. I love a scented hand cream but quite often the essential oils make it greasy and if I put too much on my hands start to itch. This doesn’t happen with the Boots one. It’s just fantastic.

Bluesheep8 · 11/12/2017 10:41

Another vote for soap and glory hand food.

Bitsy1968 · 11/12/2017 14:17

Thanks everyone.
I've changed a few things - using bar soap instead of handwash has helped a lot, plus I've changed the washing up liquid to Ecover and that has worked miracles.

I got the O'Keefes working hands balm. It's a tad greasy so I only use it at night but it's done a wonderful job of healing the cracks on my thumb, already. Hubby's also fallen in love with it....he's a gardener and his hands are wrecked, but this is really helping.
Thank you!
