Likes lots of people I feel sluggish and dull this time of year; especially my skin; I'm in my early 40's. I rarely bother to wear makeup and my teenager has 'borrowed' the random things I had. Would welcome suggestions for everyday(ish!) basics that will stop me avoiding mirrors until Spring!

Bare minerals complexion rescue, any old blusher and a waterproof mascara is all you need IMO. Don’t get drawn into contour, highlighter and bronzer. Eyeshadow can be just blusher swept over the lids for ease.

Superdrug naturally radiant overnight peel (don't worry it's just a gel no actual peeling) will help with the sluggish winter skin thing.

A bit of concealer or sheer foundation if you feel better with it
A nice blusher that suits you
A light eyeshadow, like a slightly shimmery gold or mauve colour (depending on your preferences/skin tone)
Eyebrow pencil but with a light touch
I don't usually add mascara
A sheer lip-balm-style lip colour

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser.

Nettletheelf · 28/11/2017 14:08

Origins Gin Zing tinted moisturiser makes me look loads healthier. Think it has reflective particles in it. I bought it following a Sali Hughes recommendation in The Guardian and it’s been great.

bb cream or concealer. eyeliner, blusher, lip pencil/lipstick, tinted lipsalve. get eyeliner and lipliner with staying power. lipsalve when out and about.
Makes like rimmel and boots 17 are fine.

AnaViaSalamanca · 28/11/2017 14:30

I think mascara and blush are most important, and concealer.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 28/11/2017 14:37

I’ve started wearing a bb cream and completely love it. Just very subtly evens out my skin. Am using one by Body Shop and v impressed with it. Cheap too, esp during their 40% off periods.

Otherwise I always wear mascara and use a dark brown powder to slightly line my eyes.

Tiny bit of blush on top of cheekbones.

I have a 3yo and 6mo and I can just about manage all of the above every day.

If you are in or near London, go to Harrods and find the Sensai counter. (It's small). Ask to try the bronzing gel in the lightest colour. There is nothing similar on the market, and Harrods is the only UK stockist these days. It's completely sheer, and you can apply it with your fingers in the dark (should it be necessary) and it just makes everyone, regardless of age, look better. That, mascara and lip balm, would be my desert island staples.

Garnier BB cream www.superdrug.com/Garnier/Garnier-BB-Cream-Oil-Free-Light-Tinted-Moisturiser-40ml/p/463961
Blusher
Eyeshadow stick (shade would depend on your eyecolour - I have greeny-blue eyes and favour taupe) www.kikocosmetics.com/en-gb/make-up/eyes/eyeshadows/Long-Lasting-Stick-Eyeshadow-01/p-KM0030600300144
Mascara
Lipgloss or lipstick in a shade close to your natural lipcolour (e.g. www.superdrug.com/Make-Up/Lips/Lip-Gloss/Rimmel-London-Oh-My-Gloss-Snog-330/p/412004 or www.kikocosmetics.com/en-gb/make-up/lips/lipsticks/Smart-Fusion-Lipstick-403/p-KM0020103240344

I like Kiko makeup for

sanitygirl · 28/11/2017 14:49

oops posted too soon - Kiko great for eyeshadow sticks, lipsticks and mascara

Squashit · 28/11/2017 15:36

I just wear foundation - Maybelline mousse one so I don’t need powder, primer, concealer because it does the lot

Red lipstick- true blue toned matte one

Eyeliner

Mascara.

I have loads of other stuff I have just given away because this does everything I want.

Eringray · 28/11/2017 15:46

I usually do my eyes well with some eye shadows, eye liner and mascara. Then I would do some blusher to keep the cheeks glow with a light lipstick.

MNOverinvestor · 28/11/2017 20:52

Laura Geller Quench'n'Tint has been a relevation - really easy to apply, doesn't streak (I all but put it on in the dark owing to piss poor bathroom lighting), stays put, looks dewy. www.cultbeauty.co.uk/laura-geller-quench-n-tint-hydrating-foundation.html

moonmaker · 28/11/2017 20:53

Dior B.B.creme . Dab on where needed
An eyeliner to complement your eye colour . Urban decay have every shade going .
Mac eyebrows is the most natural way to very lightly fill in your brows to beaten them .

B.B. creme , eye liner and eyebrow pencil are my bare minimum .
I use benefit coralista blusher for an added healthy glow sometimes too .

A few years ago ThisWorks had a bronzing gel very much like this. It was the lightest hint of a tan and smelled of caramel. They stopped making it though.

Thanks for all the responses ☺ I'll have a proper read through of your suggestions in the morning.

I live in hope that another company will copy the Sensai preferably cheaper. There's a Guerlain product not dissimilar, even more £, but it breaks me out.
