Horribly greasy hair and horribly itchy scalp

ChocolatePHD · 27/11/2017 07:37

I am the owner of the sexy combo above. My hair looks like it's been dipped in a vat of oil by the nextmorning after washing, I've always had to wash it every day. But sometimes I have an itchy scalp which is driving me nuts right now.

Dry shampoo makes the itch worse.

I can't not wash it because it's embarrassingly greasy and horrid.

Any product suggestions or ideas?

What shampoo are you using for your hair? If its quite strong to combat the oily hair could it be irritating your scalp?

pigeondujour · 27/11/2017 07:46

Have you tried the body shop ginger shampoo? It's really doing wonders for my dry itchy scalp without affecting my hair.

Littlelambpeep · 27/11/2017 07:47

T gel have a shampoo for greasy hair. It is great

Sparkletastic · 27/11/2017 07:50

Sounds like seborrhitic dermatitis (sp?) - 2nd vote for TGel. Massage it into scalp and hair and leave for 5 minutes before rinsing.

ChipInTheSugar · 27/11/2017 07:50

Another good one is the men's elvive one. Black bottle with orange cap.

Orangesox · 27/11/2017 07:52

Have you tried the body shop ginger dandruff shampoo? It’s worked wonders for my extremely irritated, (previously seborrheic dermatitis covered) scalp. Provided I don’t go to heavy with product use I can easily go 2 days after before it needs washing again which seems to have done wonders for said irritation.

You do have to give it a good scrub with the tips of your fingers and nails, and then leave it on for a good 5-10 minutes for best results. Do not get it in your eyes, it’s like the fires of mount doom!

I get little patches of very dry skin and inflamed hair follicles on my scalp. It has also gone flaky this week for the first time in my life! I love Lush's Rehab shampoo for scalp problems and am off to buy another bottle this week. Its the only thing that gets rid of the sore patches and makes my hair lovely. Really worth a try. It is over a fiver a bottle now I think but if you talk to staff you might be able to get a sample.

T gel, use it several times the first time.

NisekoWhistler · 27/11/2017 07:56

Also when showering use lukewarm water it definitely make your hair less greasy

Cakescakescakes · 27/11/2017 07:56

You need Tgel (the brown coal tar one - not the clear ones which are not as effective) to sort out your scalp. I’ve used it for years to keep the itch at bay. Use it for a few times in a row then use it a couple of times a week to keep it under control. For greasy hair by far and away the BEST clarifying shampoo is Redken Cleansing Cream. Again use once a week as it can be very drying so you will need conditioner on the ends. I’m now in a cycle of washing my hair about 4 times a week - once with Tgel, once with Redken and twice with a normal shampoo in between (I like the herbal essences green one.) I’ve had dermatitis on my scalp since I was a child so have had 30+ years of battling this plus horrifically waxy greasy hair since pregnancy.

Cakescakescakes · 27/11/2017 07:59

Also the only dry shampoo that my scalp seems to tolerate is by Klorane - the gentle oat based one. It’s pricier than Batiste etc but you can get it in Boots and it doesn’t have a very overpowering fragrance like the rest have which maybe is part of what causes the irritation. I use it on my fringe in the second day and only wash every other day now.

Notreallyhappy · 27/11/2017 08:01

My son had really bad issue with this.. as recommended by his hair dresser Redken scalp relief dandruff control shampoo. Stops flakes & itching. It's £10 on look fantastic but lasts a few months of everyday use.

Notreallyhappy · 27/11/2017 08:02

Also free delivery in 2 - 3 days

yowerohotesies · 27/11/2017 08:15

Your scalp is being massively irritated by the daily shampooing which is making the problem worse.

I had hair exactly like this and it was miserable but I did manage to resolve it.

Now, I must not wash my hair every day because if I do it reverts back to being a grease bomb in less than 24 hours. I wash every 2-3 days and this works well. Similar to T-gel I used a specialist shampoo called Nizoral that got me from where you are to how it is now.

While you are sorting this out you need to reconcile yourself to the fact that you simply can't start every morning with your hair having that "just washed" look. look into hats or scarves perhaps?

Poor you @ChocolatePHD

I have seborrheic dermatitis and get similar symptoms - itchy scalp, greasy hair. I saw a Dermatologist, as I had the dermatitis on my face too. He warned me off tar based shampoos, as they can irritate the scalp more and cause the scalp to get into the cycle of developing a crusty and itchy scab that comes off and leaves sore skin behind (sorry it's disgusting, but true!). A shampoo called Dermax 500 has really improved my scalp. It's available behind the pharmacy counter.

I hope you find a solution soon Smile

ChocolatePHD · 27/11/2017 08:58

yowerohotesis it's not a just washed look I need, it's a not just dipped my head in a vat of oil look! It's honestly disgusting and the more greasy t gets the more itchy it is.

Lots of votes for t gel I see.

I did use the bs ginger shampoo for a while and it left my hair a static mess.

Thank you for all the recommendations. I've been alternating a few different shampoos including an SLS free one just out of desperation really to see if it helps but it doesn't.

I have the same. Very greasy hair and itchy flaky sensitive scalp.
The only thing I'm able to use is head and shoulders. Still have to use it every day but at least my scalp isn't scabby and itchy.
I tried t gel and it didn't work for me. Might try the body shop one.

Kitsharrington · 27/11/2017 09:51

Make sure you aren't over stimulating your scalp when you shampoo. I went through about a year of inexplicably greasy scalp and couldn't work out why. My hair dresser suggested I was scrubbing too hard (I was really going to town because I thought that was the right thing to do in order to get it squeaky clean), and making my scalp over-produce oil. Now I gently use the flats of my palms to shampoo rather than really scrubbing and my hair is back to only needing to be washed twice a week.
