How long should makeup last? Should I reapply?

I'm satisfied with my makeup regime - Max Factor 3-in-1 (contains primer), powder to set. Yay. It lasts a fair 4-5 hours which has been sufficient for some time, but I'm now back at work - long days, makeup really needs to survive 7.30am until 6pm, and after-work commitments, I'd like it to last even longer.

I let my moisturiser dry for 10-15 minutes, this is a tip I found on Youtube. I don't touch my face so it isn't rubbed off. It's mostly oil. I have bought blotting paper - good, though gross, but inefficient to repeat all day. I have added in another primer but it doesn't make any difference. There are setting sprays I could try, but really, I'm wondering if my expectations are too high - is it really supposed to last from, say, 7am til 9pm? Is a setting spray really going to make a difference?

Should I reapply? Maybe with a decent wipe I could get rid of the crappy, patchy layer at 4ish and reapplication would probably be quicker than blot/powder topups. Which may remove oil but the foundation becomes patchy and a little flakey. It looks like a map. As if the primer has remained but the colour is gone.

How long does your last? Do you do a sneaky reapply?

If I want my make up not to budge then I just use Double wear

I use benefit porefessional as a primer then apply foundation and powder to finish. I do use a cheap setting spray sometimes but I find it doesn't always make any difference to how long it stays. The primer made the most difference to me.
Have you tried any different primers?

Today I am wearing the same foundation as you are.
It lasts all day on me, I do use a seperate primer too, whatever brand of foundation I use.
Different primers suit different foundations. Something to do with whether both they are oil or water based products. If they don't match, then it causes the make-up to run, crack, ball up, separate etc.
There is a website which has a chart showing popular products and which category they fall into. Sorry I can't remember what it is called.
Other than that, it's just trial and error to see what is compatible.
It's strange your make-up is just disappearing if you aren't touching your face or having clothing rub against it.
Setting sprays do work and it's worth trying one.

Weird tip, put powder on BEFORE foundation, it really works!

Acadia · 25/11/2017 16:40

It's not disappearing, per se - I've had some do that - it's just I go shiny, I can blot it, but then underneath the foundation is patchy. Like I can see my redness coming back through next to tiny particles of dry-looking foundation bits, like watching a puddle dry up.

I have the Ordinary primer that everyone raves about, smells a bit like morning breath.

I'll have a look and check nothing's oil based, that might help.

Hm, I just checked and both the foundation and primer are silicone based. Maybe I should try something water.

Powder first sounds an interesting tip to try!

Benefit Porefessional followed by EL Doublewear.

Brilliant combination for those of us with oily skin that need make up to stay on all day (and evening)

I had to change my foundation brand after my children as the max factor just seemed to be absorbed. I stepped up my night time moisturiser and used a lighter day Clinique one & now use a Clinique foundation which lasts all day & night.

I think it's unrealistic to expect make up to last 14 hours. I don't have oily skin. I sometimes use a tiny bit of powder but I always need to touch up after 4-5 hours, especially under the eyes where my blue shows through.
