I have a slightly metallic looking black pleated midi skirt as yet unworn. I am a bit stuck on what to wear it with.

If you have one please can you inspire me?

I veer towards the casually dressed end of the scale as I don't get out often.

Thank you in advance.

People wearing these now, are you wearing opaque tights? Or bravely going bare-legged? I have a fab leopard print one and wore it with a black slightly cropped turtleneck (sitting just on the waist), black Stan Smiths and black leather biker jacket, but without the bare-leg gap I just felt it looked daft. (On me, this isn’t a criticism of anyone else.) Where am I going wrong?

crazymissdaisy · 23/11/2017 22:00

Personally and I know the fashion police will arrest me, I'm wearing nude tights but really nice ones so they actually look like bare legs, but keep me warmer and hoist in my saddle bags!

BearFoxBear · 23/11/2017 22:11

Yes to nude tights - I live in Scotland, bare legs are not an option!!

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/11/2017 22:15

I did nude fishnets through September (also Scotland!) but all the proper nude tights I tried were v shiny, plus I laddered them within about seven seconds. So that was expensive AND annoying!

I think I'll have to do a trying on session with various tops and jumpers, jackets (blazer, denim and biker) and boots (knee highs and ankle boots with opaque tights) along with my hoik the tummy in knickers to give this skirt a fighting chance.

Your jumpers sounds lovely crazymissdaisy and Judydreamsofhorses. Would you have any links or pictures please?

martin I have this jumper from Whistles in various guises, including black, and it is perfect with things which are more a-line - I wear the a lot with wide-legged cropped trousers. (There I wear crocheted type tights underneath for the gap.)

I only have bare legs on the hottest days of summer. My velvet midi is being worn with opaques but since I'm short it comes down to the top of my ankle boots so more of a maxi. If there was more of a gap then I'd be tempted by nude tights and big socks (almost an anklewarmer effect!).

dantdmistedious · 24/11/2017 11:12

I do t think knee high boots work.

My beautiful pleated skirt has gone to charity. No matter what I put with it it made me look HUGE.

RoseWhiteTips · 24/11/2017 11:52

A thick woollen cable crew neck. You need to create contrast otherwise you look like a 1950s housewife.

RoseWhiteTips · 24/11/2017 11:53

The jumper had to be big and boyfriend-style.

browndollXo · 24/11/2017 11:54

Bodysuit and barely there heels with fur jacket small clutch ? Nice earrings & maybe a bracelet

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 24/11/2017 13:24

I gave it a quick try on earlier (sans tights and sturdy knickers). Barbara Woodhouse came to mind. Damn.

Tight top and black stiletto sock boots. The only way to ward off the whiff of Barbara Woodhouse.

FlorenceLyons · 24/11/2017 18:08

I'm wearing mine today with a thin grey merino top, short cream fake fur jacket and brown slightly over the knee boots. And tights - it's freezing!

Wellhellothere1 · 24/11/2017 19:49

Oh this thread is making me want a new pleated skirt! I had a black one I loved from new look but I've now lost weight and it hangs off me (not a stealth boast!). Does anyone have any recommendations for one that's not too shiny? Sorry to hijack.

CointreauVersial · 24/11/2017 23:07

I wear mine with a chunky jumper and trainers/ankle boots. With a biker jacket or similar. Bare legs, so not a look for the depths of winter!

I find tights or formal tops make the whole outfit very frumpy. I also struggle with tucking-in, as I have a bit of a tum.

Racheyg · 24/11/2017 23:17

I have a pleated black leather look skirt and I wear it with tshirt tucked in and trainers.

Going out would be a cami and strapped sandals

MaryLennoxsScowl · 25/11/2017 13:29

I've been wearing mine with black opaques for months (Scotland) and either a cropped woolly jumper or a fine knit tucked in one, and black trainers or ankle boots. It doesn't look frumpy to me!

CointreauVersial · 25/11/2017 15:31

MaryLennox - maybe it's because I'm 50. I have to be careful how I style certain things, or I end up looking like my mother. See also floral print.

I'm nearly 50. I know what you mean though and it's why I wear my pleated skirt with flat ankle boots and a slouchy jumper. Mum would have worn it in the 80s with a tucked in satin shirt/top plus court shoes.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 04/12/2017 13:31

I've admitted defeat with this one! The skirt has gone back. No matter what way I tried to dress it up I looked very frumpy and dumpy. At least I've got a refund on the credit card to look forward to Xmas Smile

One trend I have to give a miss!

Thanks for your advice though.
