Does toner damage hair? Hair breaking off after T&G dye job

Went to Toni and Guy about a month ago for a T-section of dark blond highlights on my naturally light brown hair. Was persuaded to have a toner put in to 'enhance' my natural hair colour, but when the toner was taken off my hair had gone a uniform bright yellow. They tried to correct it with a darker toner, which turned my hair copper. Finally, the manager had to re-dye my hair back to its natural colour and re-highlight. The salon assured me that because toner does not contain bleach or ammonia, it cannot damaged hair.
However, since then, large clumps of my hair have been breaking off at mid-section. It looks awful - frizzy and terrible condition in a way that it was not before. Am I right in thinking that it has been over-processed? Am if so, do you think that I should have any recourse to compensation from T&G? (not sure what exactly - perhaps free haircut, conditioning treatment, or simply a refund for the botched dye job that appears to be responsible for this? )

They did this to me. It took ages for my hair to recover. I don't go to T&G any more.

Go back and show them what a mess they've made. You deserve a refund.

Thank Toss, sorry this happened to you too. Did you manage to get a refund?

They rectified the mess for me free of charge, but I didn't pursue a refund. I should have.

Have emailed a complaint to head office, asking for my money back and a free haircut once the damaged hair starts growing out. Fingers crossed!

Good luck!

Typically a toner( the brand t&g use) are a semi permanent which only goes up to 12vol. It is acid based which neutralises the hair after colour and adds shine. The damage will have been caused by highlights. One set of highlights on reasonable conditioned hair will change the integrity of the hair but you had highlights on top of highlights. I would imagine there wasn’t another option but had it have been in the company I work for, we would have added smartbond or olaplex to the second batch and take Home shampoo and treatment with protein.

Thanks MoBro - that's useful. I've just spoken to the salon, and they've offer me a treatment with L'Oreal Smartbond tomorrow. From my quick online research, it looks as though that is usually applied whilst doing the colour. Can it also be applied post-colour? Quite keen to educate myself on this to ensure that they don't process my hair further in the name of 'treatment'.

Thank Ah Again - I've just put some of that K-Pac stuff in my Amazon Basket.

Yes, it is also used as a stand alone treatment without colour.

That's helpful, thank you Smile

Same thing here, 9 years ago. My hair was like straw by the time they’d corrected the mess they’d made. I got a full refund and products to use to “aid condition”. I would never, ever go to a TIGI salon again. In fact, one has opened close to me and I shudder every time I walk past. I ended up haveing my bra strap length hair chopped into a bob....that’s how bad it was!

Go back. Get a full refund and ask them what they plan to do about it.
