Are dresses and leggings frumpy?

I'm 36 and a big girl, 6ft tall. I am the queen of tunics and wide legged trousers which I am sick of, I wear them because they cover me up. I want to start wearing knee length dresses in a modern style and I feel the need to cover my legs as its winter and I'm too scared to bare. I'm wondering though if I'm just moving from one frumpy style to another? Also what footwear do I need as I don't have a clue! I am the dreaded black flat shoe wearer, comfort over style.

Sadly, yes, I think probably still frumpy.
Very popular though!

Around here you'd see shortish dress+leggings+uggs, or officey knee dress+thick tights+knee boots

MrsOverTheRoad · 16/11/2017 22:58

Would you wear black, thick tights? I think they look better than leggings.

As for shoes...get some nice ankle boots.

NotNowBernard1 · 16/11/2017 22:59

No they're not frumpy.

Whiterabbitears · 16/11/2017 23:00

Yep I'm probably swapping frumpy for yet more frumpy! Do you think dresses and ankle boots look awful on big legs/calves?

You sound fabulous Smile I’m a dwarf but I wear dresses with opaque tights and flat boots i think I look ok. I think tights are better than leggings. I have short boots and knee high boots from red or dead

ChangingStates · 16/11/2017 23:02

My go to wear is dresses or tunics over jeans- high waisted skinny fit ones from uniqlo are pretty inexpensive. I’m a size 14 with big boobs, bum & thighs. I am not stylish but I am happy!

AngelaTwerkel · 16/11/2017 23:03

Tights make my feet feel sweaty and yuck. Can you get footless tights? Or are footless tights just...leggings.

Whiterabbitears · 16/11/2017 23:05

Thankyou Queen Grin I agree that boots look better, I am so used to my legs being covered in baggy trousers that it will feel weird having them out, its scary trying a new look but I am so bored with my image, I work with ladies 30 years older than me with a younger style.

I like casual dresses over jeans, I've never tried skinny jeans, would black ones be better? And yes I always used to find tights fall down to my knees within hours!

I found the same trouble with tights, but discovered thick, opaque stockings.

Whiterabbitears · 16/11/2017 23:14

Are they hold up types?

AngelaTwerkel · 16/11/2017 23:15

theonlyway can you suggest a brand? Last I tried was M&S velvet touch. I just hate that synthetic feeling!

AngelaTwerkel · 16/11/2017 23:16

Oh stockings, not tights. Tell me more...

Appuskidu · 16/11/2017 23:38

I wear dresses and leggings-I doubt people can tell that they’re not thick tights. I hate tights, they are itchy, get pulls in and cut me in half acroaa the middle-I haven’t worn them for over a decade.

JaceLancs · 16/11/2017 23:50

They would look frumpy on me but I’m quite short and look better in opaques with boots for most dresses

sourpatchkid · 17/11/2017 00:18

Yep frumpy. I wear them all the time! I look frumpy

Do tights

You could always add a knee high boot

Ps stop drowning yourself in clothes - im a big girl too, I look loads better in fitted stuff (I just can’t be arsed)

Whiterabbitears · 17/11/2017 00:20

What kind of dresses are you all wearing? I'm plus size but wondering what styles are relatively current?

OP posts:
Whiterabbitears · 17/11/2017 00:24

Oh god I do drown myself! Massive oversize tops in a batwing/cape style which make me feel hideous! They hit just above my tummy giving me a delightful pouch look. Add wide leg jersey M&S trousers and you get the picture. I am so sick of dressing like this.

leggings are just so much more comfortable than tights. No drag/sag/holes in the toes. Wear them with socks inside ankle or long boots. Perfect.

LimpidPools · 17/11/2017 00:25

Don't know about anything else, but buy m&s (and probably other shops too) XL. They're an absolute godsend for those of us that are long of leg - no more shuffling around with a gusset chafing your upper thighs.

LimpidPools · 17/11/2017 00:26

I meant tights btw

Whiterabbitears · 17/11/2017 00:27

Everyone is suggesting boots so I'm going to look for some, calf length or ankle length? I am embarrassed that I'm so out of touch Blush

OP posts:
Whiterabbitears · 17/11/2017 00:29

M&S are good for length so will look there.

Do you definitely want dresses? What about high waisted slim fit skinny jeans? You’ll be surprised how faltering the right pair can be

Start celebrating what you have - stop hiding it. You could look fucking fabulous!

(If you do want dresses tell us what size and what occasion and we can browse for you Smile)

sourpatchkid · 17/11/2017 00:39

*flattering (not got my glasses on)
