How the hell do you curl hair?

I've been wanting to curl my hair for a while now but every time I try my hair ends up with one little kink in it and burns all up my hands and arms.

I have watched countless YouTube videos but none seem to help. I think the problem lies in me not being able to coordinate whilst using mirrors. I always turn or move the wrong way.

Also is longer or shorter hair easier to curl and what would you recommend, a curling wand or tongs?

When my hair was longer I liked a wand.
The best way I found was to spilt my hair horizonally, like they do at the hair dressers when they cut it. I spilt it into either two or three depending on how long my hair was.
Then I'd make about 6 curls each layer.
I'd hold it at the very end of the hair and wrap the hair around the wand. I'd end up holding it on with millimeters of hair at the end. I would start aboit a third of the way down the hair, not at the roots.
I found mirrors really hard so I just had one mirror in front of me.
And practice.
You can get silicone glove things which might help?

Have you tried plating it over night? Wand work best i’d say but i also have the same problem im no good with doing hair which is a shame because mine is so long!!

Get a lesson from the hairdresser. You can try out tongs and wands and see what you prefer. They will be able to teach you how to do it yourself. Once you've got the knack of how much hair to section, what way to hold wand, etc it's so much easier and then just a case of practice to get better and quicker at doing it.

Thanks for the replies. I think next time I try I will use the silicone gloves. I have a wand and it came with a massive glove but it's far too big and I can't feel the hair whilst wearing it.

I hadn't even thought of asking the hairdresser for a lesson. I'll let it grow a little and then ask her for help when I next go to get my hair cut.

I am glad I'm not the only one who struggles with mirrors :p

I use ghd's to curl, it's quick and easy and you don't get the kink at the end that you can get with tongs. Heated rollers are really easy too, usually gives a softer curl.

What sort of look are you after? Big loose curls, or tighter ringletty ones?

Bluntness100 · 16/11/2017 21:14

I use babliss curl secret. I also am terrible at using a wand, I find curl secret really easy and can do everything from waves to curls. I’d be lost without it..! Takes a couple of attempts to get used to it, and now o could do it with my eyes closed.my hair is nearly waist length when it isn’t straight now.

Bluntness100 · 16/11/2017 21:15

When it is straight sorry

namechangedtoday15 · 16/11/2017 21:16

I use straightners but it really is a case of practice.

JorlyWood · 16/11/2017 21:23

I'm looking for loose curls. Yeah I guess it is practice but burning myself so much has scared me :(

I use babyliss curl secret/miracurl as well. Its requires 0 effort or skill, you hold a section of hair and close the machine over it, it beeps and does its magical thing, you let go. Thats it!

esk1mo · 17/11/2017 00:42

how long is your hair? my hair is thick and almost at my bum and i use a heatless curl technique!

i wash my hair, blow dry with a round brush (curling it at the ends). then i tie 2 socks together (lol) and put around my head like a headband. i put my hair into sections, twist and then wrap it round the makeshift headband. then go to sleep! you can get special heatless curl headbands, i should probably invest.

google image search “heatless curls with headband” and have a look. i use a coconut heat protection oil before i blow dry, then hairspray when i take the curs out. they last me all day, even throughout the gym.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Had a look at the babyliss curl secret and it looks like that's what I need. That headband technique sounds very interesting though so might try that first before forking out for a new machine.

I knew I'd find some great answers here.
