You know those things that are like hairbands with feathers/flowers etc on? They are sometimes worn to weddings instead of hats

I cannot for the life of me remember what they are called - like an alice band with something on it that's worn to weddings?

Still with me? Well I have one, it came with my dress, but I'm not really sure how to wear it. Does it go near the front of the head. obviously i don't wear it with my hair scraped back. I'm confusing myself now.
I have straight hair and i don't think it looks right. DH suggested curling my hair with the tongs, and having the curls round the "thing", but he's a bloke what does he know!

Fascinator?

percypig · 16/04/2007 20:50

Is it a fascinator? Or actually that might not be a hairband, more a 'thing'

PrincessPeaHead · 16/04/2007 20:50

they are horrible and make people look like insects

I don't know, that's why I'm asking .
This is actually quite nice and not very big, it came with the dress, and I can't decide how to wear it, or even if I should.

My Mum wore to my brother wedding and looked so glam. She styled her hair sort of over the band part so it was more or less hidden.

lemonaid · 16/04/2007 20:52

They're called fascinators, or sometimes hatlets. It depends on the style where they are worn but with an alice band style I'd think fairly far forward.

twentypence · 16/04/2007 20:55

I don't think they look right unless you have short or curly hair, or have an up do at the hairdresser and take the thing along.

percypig · 16/04/2007 20:55

OK, sounds like a fascinator then. My MiL wore one to my SiL's wedding, and I wore one, instead of a veil, to mine. Mine was feathers and I wore it pushed into the top of my chignon (think that's what it's called) at the back of my head and kind of sticking up. I've also worn/seen them worn at the fron, but over to the side.

deaconblue · 16/04/2007 21:41

My mum calls them "billy do's" WTF??? I would try to style hair over the band bit. Quite like them myself although look crap on me as my hair is HUGE

MrsBadger · 17/04/2007 08:37

if it's on an alice band and you'd rather have it on a slide or a comb or something, you can probably snip it off and sew it onto something else quite easily
(I spent the day before my wedding doing this for my mum, only she wanted it off a comb and on an alice band. Looked great in the end)

i have fairly long, straight hair which falls into a side parting. i wore a comb fascinator to a wedding last year and everyone commented on how nice and glam it looked.i scraped one side of my hair back with it andkept the other side and my fringe down.i have to say i looked pretty good!!
