Do you think expensive makeup is worth it?

I was looking at my makeup collection, which is a variety of expensive and drugstore and I was thinking if the expensive products were worth the price tag. I care to the conclusion that for a higher price, quite a lot of things were worth it.

Things I think are worth a higher price:

Primer
Foundation
Concealer
Setting powder
Most eyebrow products
Eyeshadow
Lipstick

I think eyeliner and mascara can be good both drugstore and higher end (remember 17 Tattoo liner?). What do you all think? Or can you find just as good products for everything for a cheaper price. When I say drugstore, I mean Superdrug or Boots (not Lancôme etc in Boots though, more like Revlon).

I adore nice (read expensive) make up. It works well, the colours suit my complexion and I’ll admit it, it makes me feel better about how I look. Also, nothing goes in the bin because it all works as it’s supposed to.

I'm sort of 50-50. I have certain items that need to be a more expensive brand but with other things I'm happy to experiment with high street brands.

Needs to be a more expensive brand: Foundation, bronzer (so it doesn't fall apart in its packaging!), lipstick (although there are rare exceptions like Rimmel Kate Moss)

Have found good high street versions/don't need to go upmarket:
Setting powder, eyeshadow, eye liner, blusher, nail varnish

On the fence: concealer (more expensive ones like Nars, YSL or Bobby Brown are better but I've found passable high street ones when I need something less spends)

Obviously mean Bobbi Brown and not Whitney's ex Blush

I used to get eyelash extensions regularly but since I discovered Lancôme mascara I don’t have to bother because it looks the same. It’s expensive but worth it.

I love Anastasia Beverly Hills modern renaissance eyeshadow palette. It’s amazing! I can suddenly do good eyeshadow now so th£40 price tag is totally worth it. A lot of expensive make up I’ve bought, I’m not mad for though

By terry hyaluronic powder great too. Lipsticks some cheap some expensive-tom Ford does last better

17 B.B. cream is fab, as are max factor creme powder blush. Kiko eyeliners are great

Always get Chanel vitallumiere foundation.
For me the right shade of lipstick is face transforming. So I'll pay up for it, but it could be a cheap one.

Ellapaella · 12/11/2017 11:37

No not necessarily. I like Estée Lauder foundation because it’s the best match for my skin tone and really does last the best but there are some very good drug store brands out there. With foundation it’s really a case of finding the right colour match, some expensive products are really no better. I have tried Mac and Chanel lipstick and neither are better than rimmel imo. Chanel lipsticks have lovely pigment but don’t last more than 30 minutes.
I pay more for eye shadow as I find that the high end brands tend to have better pigment and blend better.
Mascaras - have tried loads and think that you don’t need to pay more than a tenner for a really good one.
So much of makeup is all hype, advertising and packaging. For example the morphe eye shadow pallets are made in the same factory and are exactly the same product as the cheaper versions sold on amazon for half the price.
Highlighters - I hate those cheapo ones in Superdrug (Mua and the like) - they are super shiney and look ridiculous. Personally I prefer a more subtle one and currently have urban decay but L’Oréal have equally nice alternatives.

Cheap/midrange make up has come a LONG way in recent years. I think it has had to, consumers are a lot more savvy and demanding now thanks to the explosion of beauty and skincare interest on blogs and social media.

That said, I tend to gravitate towards more expensive products for most things as I get older. I find that the finer textures are generally more forgiving on my skin.

Bratsandtwats · 12/11/2017 13:06

I think expensive foundation is worth it. Anything else, you can get fab dupes.

I have Chanel and Nars foundation, but anything from Makeup Revolution, Nyx, Maybelline and No7 up to Urban Decay, Benefit, Bobbi Brown and Clinique for everything else.

squoosh · 12/11/2017 15:16

When did 'drugstore become an actual thing in the UK? I presume it's a youtube/beauty blogger influence.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/11/2017 15:33

ohyesiam, can I ask you more about this Chanel foundation please? What's it like to use? I liked the Estee Lauder one because it blends in but my skin tends to be dry and I end up with some odd patches...

misscheery · 12/11/2017 16:27

Yes, I think it is worth it. My skin is not great (under control, though, thank God!), so I am trying to use quality make-up.

I keep re-buying the following:
-Urban Decay foundation- the original one, not the new All nighter one as the latter is crap
-Urban Decay concealer in light warm
-Make up forever HD powder as it helps with sebum excess
-Guerlain gold mascara (I tried so many but this is my holy grail)
-either mufe or too faced for my eyebrows
-Benefit for blushers/contouring
-I use both cheap and expensive lipsticks (I like urban decay, MAC, but also NYX and sleek)

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 12/11/2017 16:33

I have a mix of things really. Estee Lauder foundation as its the best colour match for me, Lancome mascara as it doesn't irritate my eyes like others do, especially Dior mascaras, my eyes hate them and I use MAC lipsticks as i like the colours and textures but everything else i have is drugstore really. I don't mind spending money on make up but if i can use a cheaper product and it be comparable to a higher end one, then i will save my money and use the cheaper product.

LazyDailyMailJournos · 12/11/2017 20:51

I have a mix. Foundation is Chanel Les Beiges - I absolutely love it. Medium coverage, lasts well, doesn't go patchy and blends beautifully so it doesn't look like you are wearing foundation.

Blusher is Sleek's rose gold. As is my brow kit and a contouring palette I bought. I don't contour but the palette is the cheapest way to get several concealers in one go, which is handy for summer/winter skin!

Mascara is Max Factor masterpiece - I keep going back to it and I have tried them all, from cheap to very expensive. This is the only mascara I have ever found which can be built up without clumping.

The best and most pigmented lipstick I have found is a recent discovery - Max Factor colour elixir. I tested a swipe on the back of my hand yesterday. It withstood several hand washes, two attempts with a nail-brush and a good going over with miscellar water. I've managed to get rid of most of it after a 40 minute soak in the bath today - but I can still see a couple of tiny pigment speckles. So if you are looking for lipstick that's a stayer then you need this stuff!
