Talk to me about "getting my colours done"

PerditaNitt · 23/10/2017 09:52

My wardrobe needs a post-maternity leave update and before investing in more grey, black and navy clothes, I was thinking of getting a colour consultation.

Any views on whether this is worth doing? Also, any opinions on HoC vs Colour me beautiful

Any recommendations for stylists in north west or central London would also be appreciated!

I had mine done earlier this year. House of Colour.
Not too sure about it tbh.
I went convinced I was an autumn and quite happy about that. Turns out I'm summer. I'm traumatised - the pink! 😂
I thought I "saw" it on the day but I just don't get it now. I can't see how the colours in my wallet look better than the ones I was wearing with the exception of a couple of "wrong".
I also don't understand how to translate those colours into actual items if that makes sense eg all piinks seem to be in the spectrum in my wallet but I know that not all the pinks in the scarves suited me. I don't get the cool/warm thing.
I've been trying with it but nope. Without sounding vein I get compliments reasonably regularly but I've not had any since trying the new colours.
That's why I'm posting so much for opinions on here! It's made shopping 100 times harder!
I'm actually quite disappointed by the whole thing.
I'm thinking of doing a personal shopping thing with a different consultant but I need to save a lot before that.

There is also an offer on the vouchers at the moment where you get a free make up voucher so worth doing that.

NotMeNoNo · 26/10/2017 20:34

I found it very helpful. I had self identified as autumn but was diagnosed as deep winter, so I got to keep my favourite burgundy, dark green etc but contrast them now with silver and bright pinks.

I'm surprised at the PP who were told to wear nothing but brown, all the seasons seem quite colourful to me but I guess not everyone fits the boxes as with anything.

Zxyzoey31 · 26/10/2017 20:36

I did it with HoC. It changed my life. I was very open to and did wear colours before but after I wear loads more and colours I would not have worn before because I didn't know what to wear them with. All my clothes go together and this makes outfits look great. It does take a bit of time to work out how it works for you but it is marvelous.
Also it is not that easy to guess by looking online for everyone.
All the seasons have a great range of colours in them.
I had the session by myself as no one else booked. You can pay more to have the session just for you.
I did the style too. Firstly my consultant got me wrong and it felt wrong so we did it again and it was great. No feeling frumpy or uncomfortable for me.

Ausparent · 26/10/2017 20:37

I had it done for free at John Lewis. Don't know if they still do it.

Still manage to dress like a clown most day s though.. .

Whenever I look at an Autumn colour wheel, there are never many blues at all. I’ve been told blue suits me, so I was surprised.
Do you suppose some people can hover between two seasons? I looked up “The Chic Fashionista” for autumn and it says most natural redheads are autumns... then on the spring page it says most redheads are spring! Does the addition of the word natural make a difference? I’m definitely a natural redhead. It does say that springs can “flow” into autumn and some autumns can actually be spring.
Maybe I am a mixture of both. Who knows...

SierraFerrara · 26/10/2017 21:11

I'm a natural redhead (well, I used to be when I was younger) but am a summer.
Hair colour doesn't matter as much as skin tone.

SierraFerrara · 26/10/2017 21:11

I'm summer, moving into winter apparently. Shrug.

secondhoneymoon · 27/10/2017 00:20

Toffee - I am Autumn and according to House of Colour I have blue in my . Wheel. I was apparently on the cusp of Autumn and Winter (which thankfully means black is still ok) but I know I suit the autumnal colours better than winter

Doobigetta · 27/10/2017 09:10

I wasn't impressed by mine. She pegged me as a Sultry Winter and put me in the most ridiculous clownish lipsticks I've ever seen. I couldn't stop laughing. Having read about it a lot since, I really like this system- www.prettyyourworld.com. I've worked out I'm either a deep soft smoky summer, or a smoky soft winter (they're pretty similar). Not a million miles away from the HoC diagnosis, but the subtle distinction and recognition that you can have colouring that's any combination of deep/light, warm/cool and clear/soft is really important.

spiney · 27/10/2017 09:29

I’m Deep Autumn and there are tons of colours in there that are not brown! ( Had it done years ago as a present from someone)
Dark grey, mustard, tomato, warm pink, yellow, teal, emerald, aubergine, mint, sage as well as all the trad autumnal ones.

SierraFerrara · 27/10/2017 11:23

Yes Doobigetta, some of the lipsticks are... questionnable!
I quite appreiciated the blusher guidance although not as heavy handedly.

MoonlightBay · 27/10/2017 13:05

I quite fancy this. I often change my hair from blonde to brunette, would this mean I would need two different wardrobes?

SierraFerrara · 27/10/2017 13:39

No Moonlightbay. They keep your hair away from your face when deciding. The idea is that you can dye your hair but as long as it's harmonious with your colouring it will still look good eg if you are cool, then your blonde and brunette shades should be cool as well.

Thank you Sierra. I have some weight to lose so may treat myself to this, when nearly there.

hmmwhatatodo · 27/10/2017 16:48

I keep coming back to this thread! Another worry is that one stylist may be a lot better than others. Is it possible for someone to train and just not be very good at it? The person in my area has literally just started and has no reviews yet.

wizzywig · 27/10/2017 16:54

I cant find where you can be a model

fuzzyfozzy · 27/10/2017 18:50

I’m worrying the same, they all have good reviews. I like to get on with someone...

Laiste · 27/10/2017 19:35

I think it would be just my luck that i'd be one of the disappointed ones

I'd like to give it a go with my grown DDs.

How much consideration is given to one's shape? Not just skin tone. I think that what ever anyone says my boobs are too in y'face for brights or pastels. I'm very top heavy hour glass and prefer muted shades on my top half. And i wouldn't want to wear pastels or brights on my bottom half unless it's mid summer.

I'm a 'muted shade' unhelpable! Grin

ilovecherries · 27/10/2017 19:42

Hmm, I think it's entirely possible for them to be trained and not good. Mine had stellar reviews and yet read from a script at times (literally, not just a crib sheet). I'd ignore reviews, they may not have been paying clients, and go for personal recommendations. And be prepared to stick up for yourself if you aren't happy!

SierraFerrara · 27/10/2017 21:29

Laiste, HOC do a range of sessions. One which looks at your colours and another one which looks at your shape and style. I guess the amount of overlap is somewhat consultant dependent but it won't be much because obviously they want you to buy both.
When you get your colours they do talk about how best to wear the colours eg I have some that I could wear head to toe and others which would be better as a small part of a pattern rather than a colour by itself. In theory your best colours would flatter you regardless of your shape.

fuzzyfozzy · 27/10/2017 22:00

Has anyone got any recommendations for nw England??

MoonlightBay · 01/11/2017 17:43

Fuzzy, I asked around on my local facebook pages. Most of the replies were positive and I got some recommendations.

I have now booked in for my colour analysis with House of Colour. I think I may be a Summer. Can't wait to find out.

fuzzyfozzy · 01/11/2017 19:03

Thanks moonlight
