Do you wear valuable jewellery on a daily basis

I'm just starting to ponder what is the point of keeping jewellery for special.

Life's short. Should the valuable (and in this case, sentimental) items be locked in a jewellery box, or should they be seeing the light of day?

I'm on two minds, nothing is likely to happen to it when it's safely stored, but also, it was given to be worn.

How do you decide?

Not massively valuable (wedding ring and eternity ring at worth a very respectable 4 figure sum together), but I never take them off. I love them and want to look at them all the time!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/10/2017 20:51

I think only my wedding and engagement ring counts as valuable as everything else is just silver. I wear them all the time. Any diamonds, platinum and decent gold should be very tough indeed. If I had posh earrings, I would wear them! Life's too short to hide things away.

Theseaweed · 19/10/2017 20:53

Yes, I do. Wear it and enjoy it.

littlechou · 19/10/2017 21:02

Heh I might chip in blithely that I wear my £100000 ring every day. Thing is The rest of me is pretty scruffy so it probably looks like costume jewellery- fine by me Grin

buckeejit · 19/10/2017 21:02

I have a few very nice bits that I keep in a safe & am often too lazy to get them out and put them away again! You've reminded me that I've got some lovely diamond studs that I haven't worn for ages so I'll get them out tomorrow!

Agree about photographing stuff!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 19/10/2017 21:07

£100 000?

You must be quite a big chou, Littlechou.

shouldaknownbetter · 19/10/2017 21:09

Yes - gorgeous engagement ring and a diamond necklace. Although I nearly lost the necklace when I went for a scan and had to remove all jewellery - I left without it and only realised when I was halfway down the road, had to run back and luckily it was still there.

Still even if I lose it I'd rather wear it a lot than keep it locked away in a box.

BuzzKillington · 19/10/2017 21:09

I do. I don't have anything mega valuable, but I wear jewellery worth a few thousand most days.

MargeryFenworthy · 19/10/2017 21:10

Yes, I'm renowned for my love of nice jewellery and have a lot of it. It is anything ft Pandora to Swarovski to Boodles and Hermes. I don't care where it's from, I love it all. Though I really should take better care of it Wink

shouldaknownbetter · 19/10/2017 21:10

£100000 ring? That'd give Pippa Middleton a run for her money!

StrumpersPlunkett · 19/10/2017 21:17

Interesting.
I have both expensive stuff that has never been worn and expensive stuff I wear every day

We got a lot of family jewellery for our wedding it isn't a styling that is compatible with modern wear so it stored at the bank for safety.

Diamonds and rubies are my thing. Platinum for metal as I don't enjoy the look of yellow gold against my skin. Oh and I have a couple of pairs of pearl earings

Longislandicetee · 19/10/2017 21:43

Wear it. OP, I typically wear about £50k worth of jewellery each day.Grin. If you are fortunate enough to have them, things are there to be enjoyed.

LifeofClimb · 19/10/2017 23:54

Wear it! I have a mix of inexpensive and expensive jewellery. Sometimes I layer them together. No one can ever guess which ones are the real diamonds. Wink

RosyPony · 20/10/2017 00:05

Yes, I wear a very nice watch every day, toughest watch I've ever owned so I don't worry about it. Same with wedding and engagement rings, chose to be idiot proof.

I'm accident prone!

BossyBitch · 20/10/2017 00:12

I'd wear it if I had any!

I've one very expensive diamond necklace that I don't wear because I don't like it and an engagement ring that I've not worn since the divorce. And I'm not into jewellery enough for me to buy myself stuff that's not ugly.

Crumbs1 · 20/10/2017 00:43

Wear it because you like it and it feels good not because it’s valuable. Don’t keep it locked away because it’s safer - that brings no pleasure.
I don’t wear much jewellery but have a few nice pieces that I do use routinely and which make me happy when I see and feel them (mainly sentimental reasons). A pink sapphire necklace my husband had made when we were in Sri Lanka, a large Amber and Gold necklace he brought back as a gift from the Chinese government, a Burmese ruby ring popped inside my valentines card last year, my eternity ring with stones for each child. A beautiful antique opal brooch his mother gave me on our wedding day. That sort of thing. Nothing worth more than about 5K, I can’t imagine spending more on decorations for myself and our lifestyle is sufficiently country to not need much more than I have.

Sgtmajormummy · 20/10/2017 01:05

"You wear this watch when you do the CLEANINGShock?" Said by the jeweller when I took it for a polish and adjustment.
"Yes, because it's mine, it holds great memories and I want to be able to look at it every day. Which includes cleaning."

RonaldMcDonald · 20/10/2017 01:12

Yes.
Between wedding, eternity and engagement ring there is 40k of diamonds( worn between two hands as now divorced)
I always wear 2ct diamond studs
A Cartier watch
Sometimes a rub over diamond tennis bracelet
I wear this daily

I have evening jewellery but it is worn infrequently and kept in a safe

bigbluedustbin · 20/10/2017 01:23

Wear it. I wear all of mine (I don’t have a lot of expensive jewelery but I wear all of it every day, earrings a necklace and a watch).

If I lose it I lose t. Home insurance covers it plus I’d rather get use out of it than have it sitting in a box forever even if it does get lost.

oldlaundbooth · 20/10/2017 01:25

I don't have any expensive jewellery as I only like watches but if I did I'd wear it.

BriechonCheese · 20/10/2017 01:30

Most of my valuable pieces are inherited and I try to wear them in rotation. I hate to think of them going unused in a jewellery box. I don't wear a lot at a time - wedding ring, another ring of my choosing that day, a watch and stud earrings. I rarely wear my necklaces and bracelets but that's because I never feel very comfortable or secure in them after breaking a valuable strand of antique pearls 11 years ago.

I went years in my old job only wearing a wedding ring, so I'm taking full advantage now.

HaHaHmm · 20/10/2017 06:48

Bossy why not get the stones from those pieces remade into something that you like?

explodingkittens · 20/10/2017 12:06

Yes, I wear two rings every day that have fairly significant market (and sentimental) value. One is my grandmother's engagement ring which I've worn everyday since my 18th birthday (I don't think I actually can take it off now!) and the other is a ring I inherited when my mum died last year. I feel sad at the idea that they'd just sit in a safe deposit box somewhere, so I wear them and think of those two lovely women every day.

Pretty much all my other jewellery is cheap as chips though Grin
