I'm v tall - 5'11 and very long legged. Size 12 bottom half but nearer 16 top half. I have a large build and even when I'm at my thinnest I tend to look 'big' across the shoulders. I can't wear pretty and floaty as I tend to look like the Hulk in drag . I stick to plain t-shirts - round or v-neck, jeans and straight or A-line skirts. I have some shirt-type tops but nothing frilly or lacey. I am getting bored of the same stuff all the time but don't know what to try next. I always seem to end up in dark colours too which is a bit dull in the summer.

Go on. Dress me please. Have a narrowish waist for my height and my bust means that anything that hangs from the shoulders or bust is a no-no iyswim. I love jeans but need some other options as that seems to be all I wear.

right!

Tallness will mean your shoulders don't look as large as you think they do, so don't worry madly, just make sure your top and bottom are balanced and you avoid high-necked and slashnecked things, ditto loose top/tight trouser combos (stay well clear of this season's smock-and-leggings look).

Wider-legged trousers - not neccesarily floaty, but made of something floppier than denim, maybe linen - could look fabulous, especially flared or bootcut ones, and with such a slim bottom wearing lighter/brighter coloured trousers with darker tops will draw the eye to your great height and legginess and away from the shoulders (and envy from the typical English pears like me).

Deep V or scoop necks (wear vest underneath if too revealing) break up your torso and avoid the monoboob look, and wrap tops that are snug round the waist are def worth a bash as they are often v flattering to your shape.
Empire things that gather under the bustline might work but will obscure your lovely waist so maybe try a couple and avoid if they make you look at all pregnant!

There's no need to wear frilly floaty things (I hate them too) but having such an imposing figure and wearing tailored stuff can mean you end up looking mannish - softer or textured fabrics like soft knits or ribs, interesting colours, and accessories like scarves, bold necklaces / earrings, bangles etc can help, also things like slightly frivolous bags or shoes.

Skirts are more difficult but long slim legs sound like they need showing off and a slightly full knee-length A-line skirt may help balance your top half, esp in an eyechatching colour or pattern. Long skirts are a minefield for the tall as they tend to hover unflatteringly at mid-calf, so unless you find some truly ankle-length floorskimming ones tread carefully.

phew!

Hope some, all or indeed any of this is some use...

Thanks MrsB

That's really helpful. Strangely I do have some very long skirts that skim my ankles - from Monsoon I think. I often wonder what normal height people are supposed to do with them... A few just on the knee a-line skirts as well but have to fight against the impulse to still wear mini-skirts - legs might be OK but I'm still 42. I love wearing knitted tops - I have a whole series of slim fitting cashmerey type jumpers but thye have become part of my every day wardrobe now.

Empire-line is horrible on me. I tried a dress on last summer and I looked dreadful. Ditto anything with puffed sleeves.....

Really like the idea of wider leg trousers.

BTW DS#1 finished his project and we handed it in on the last day of term. Yet to hear the results. The book was most helpful
