What should I buy in New York?

Off to NYC and was wondering what things I may want to get that haven't hit the UK yet? Any make up, products or clothes that may not be available here?

Thank you OP. I came on to ask the very same question! Going the week after next!

This is great and will certainly keep me busy. I love Century 21 so will definitely be going there. What sort of things are worth buying at Sephora? Is it like SpaceNK or different?

From Sephora Milk Make up good value as sizes of products are huge. I got a stick blush and highlighter and they've lasted over a year.

If you like pottery Jonathan Adler in Greenwich Village is worth a visit. His furniture is amazing but $$$$.

Sephora is like a cheaper, younger, bigger, louder version of Space NK. It's like a cosmetics hypermarket.

I am also visiting New York just before Christmas so will keep an eye on this thread, thanks for all the ideas!

If you're going to the 9/11 memorial and museum, I would pop into the Westfield shopping centre next door to go to Sephora - it's smaller than the mid town branches but much less of a bun fight than at Times Square.

Another vote for See's Candies and J Crew.

Sephora carries skin and hair care products, perfume and a TON of different makeup ranges, from very boutique expensive stuff to space nk, bobbi brown, benefit, to their own Sephora brand (which is great) their bigger stores also offer eye / brow / makeup bars and I think one does blowouts (blow drys)

I always end up spending a ton on their travel / mini versions of stuff (they're fabulous as stocking fillers) its like going to ikea for one thing and spending 80 quid on candles and tea lights Grin

Also, depending on what sort of shopping you like, the big stores a worth a look, especially around thanksgiving / christmas for their window displays. Bloomingdales and Macys are worth a look (but they can be maddening inside due to weird layout and are pricy)

I still love Chelsea / tribeca / west village for wandering and finding independent boutiques, altho again it can be eye watering in prices. Also has the benefit a good % of nice cafes / coffee places round there (and also independent hotels if you want a cocktail - try The James hotel rooftop bar)

My top tip for Century 21 is don't go on a a Friday after about 12 / 1pm as its absolute chaos with tourists trying to buy 50 million handbags each. Late evening or as it opens are the best time imo. Altho if you're used to Primark Oxford Circus on a Saturday, you'll be fine!

Forgot to say that there are a number of C21 locations and although the downtown one is possibly the best for designer stuff (haven't been to all of them but that one seemed more high-end), the one at Lincoln Center is less mental (as mentioned upthread it can be a crush). Also the one in Morristown (NJ, about an hour by train) is big and seems pretty civilised.

Keep these suggestions coming in - so helpful.

ZaraW · 21/10/2017 10:16

Look at Nordstrom Rack they have good deals. And if the Farmer's Market is on across the road in Union Square they have some amazing produce.

Mamia15 · 21/10/2017 17:12

where's the best place to buy Nike/Adidas sports wear (early xmas shopping for teens)?

RandomUsernameHere · 21/10/2017 17:16

Henri Bendel

RandomUsernameHere · 21/10/2017 17:17

Sorry not for jeans

Beketaten · 21/10/2017 18:15

Fulton Street in Brooklyn has lots of outlet stores including Nordstrom Rack, Gap Outlet, Express Factory Outlet and TJ Maxx. Plus there's a Bath and Body Works and a Target in the Atlantic Terminal Mall. Lots of buses and subway trains serve the area.

You are all so helpful - thank you!

Where can I get some fun clothes for 11yr old DD?

CharlieBoo · 22/10/2017 15:52

New York shopping is really expensive.. not many bargains to be had due to crap exchange rate and hugely inflated prices for tourists.. depending on how long your going for head to Woodbury common outlet, it’s about an hour upstate and well worth it..

Like pp said you can’t get anything there you can’t get in London and to be honest London’s cheaper!!! Spend your money on sight seeing and amazing restaurants .. have a great trip

CharlieBoo · 22/10/2017 15:53

The only thing we went mad on is American girl for my 7 year old dd who spent all her birthday money in there but your dd is probably too old for this now... x
