Can I ask your honest opinion

I'm currently a SAHM to 3 school age children.
After my 2nd, I trained as a makeup artist on the side.
Do you think people would be willing to pay for a makeup lesson using either items they already have, recommendations for products that would suit them and pay a bit more to go to department stores-counters so I could recommend products. The point would be that I would be brand independent and that it would be geared towards their lifestyle i.e. If the only wore makeup when going out and didn't want 15 products as a opposed to someone who was looking for foundation / base help and application.

I'm on a local FB group and someone advertised this type of service recently, they were inundated with responses.

It sounds like something I'd pay for. However, I'd want the make up artist to come to my home with a range of products, do the lesson and then sell the goodies. For example, take the order on the day and supply a few days later. You could also make some extra money that way as you could possibly buy products at wholesale prices and sell to the client at the RRP.

To attract clients, it would be useful to have a website with before and afters.

I'd come to you, I think. Part lesson, part treat, if that makes sense?

Have never worn makeup but would love a lesson or two to give me the choice of wearing it for special occasions.
I have zero idea about applying it or what colours might suit me. I don't reckon YouTube would be much help for a complete beginner and don't like the idea of going to a department store makeup counter.

I rarely get all dressy but when I do (for weddings etc) I always feel that that a little makeup would complete the look.
I would definitely pay you for personal help/advice and maybe a shopping trip (for cruelty free cosmetics)

Yes to JoJos suggestion of a website (or FB page) with before and after photos. Also, using lots of different models (ages, sizes, skin tones etc) would be a good way to give confidence to prospective clients

I would LOVE this.

Thanks all.

It’s a good idea. Probably the best way you could market this is through creating great YouTube tutorials and having your contact details for fans who want to pay for a bespoke 1-to-1 service. The more likeable / frank / down to earth you are in the videos, the more demand you’d get for your paid work. There’s definitely a demand for beauty people who aren’t afraid to say when something’s shit. Good luck!

Shadow666 · 17/10/2017 06:16

Yes, for sure!

I tried watching a YouTube tutorial but she used 5 products for the base alone. It’s too much!

I live in NI and Paddy McGurkan is a professional make up artist here, who also runs a make up school and has a brilliant shop. You can do this at his store. Book a session with a pro, and bring your make up bag. They go through all your stuff, show you how to put it on properly, and make recommendations. No hard sell though. It's brilliant! Go for it OP.
