Do most people feel the need to update clothes every year?

I felt slightly confused about a thread here earlier. It wouldn't occur to me to replace coats each year (mine have lasted for years and years) and I have 2 jackets (actually only 4 years old) which are brilliant. I have 5 bras which fit really well and I'd only replace jumpers/skirts if the moths get at them (I need soft natural fibres - skin sensitivity) but it's just replacing knickers, socks and boots aside from that.

I also think it's far easier for someone like me, who's built up a big collection over the years, to make my clothes last.

Firstly I don't have to hammer the same things day in day out so the wear and tear gets spread. Secondly, because I have a lot of clothes I can afford to be choosy and scour the charity shops and dress agencies, not for basics but for high end bits and pieces that will in turn, last longer. And when I do buy new, I can buy better quality. OK I may have to save up, but I have an income that allows me to save.

Thirdly we all know that quality isn't the same as it was even five years ago. If I bought a coat now for say £100 and that was my only coat that I had to wear every single day for 4 months solid then I wouldn't be at all surprised if it needed replacing the following winter.

I buy new things as I go along, because I love clothes and love shopping. I have things in my wardrobe which are ten years old, and others I bought last month.

I agree with floisme that no-one looks twice at my DP when he buys records every month...

I don't buy new things because it's a new season, but I do regularly buy new things because I see them and like them. Like some others have said it's something I enjoy, and that I'm lucky enough to be able to afford. I have some clothes that I've had for years, and other things that I may only keep for a year or so before giving to the charity shop.

I dont think I'll bother replacing my winter coat this year, as I've seen similar ones in the shops to the one I bought 2 years ago.
I have just culled last year's jumpers and replaced with new knitwear. I have an anxiety sweat problem, and whilst I don't think I smell, it does take it's toll on my clothes by staining them. I have just got rid of some tops I still liked and wore, but were starting to discolour under the arms.
