Hair dye,would this work?

Hi all,
I've been bleaching and dyeing my hair bright colours for over 10 years now.
I'm finding it's too high maintenance & the bleaching is taking its toll on my hair.
I last did it in August a deepish purple which has faded to a lightish pink with just over a inch of light brown roots.(with few greys)
Would it be possible to dye my roots and a bit of the lengths and do a sort of ombre kinda thing?
I'd rather not dye it all over as it's really dry at the ends. I'm then thinking of dyeing the faded pink ends/lengths with a red semi.
Do you think it'd work? How would I go about not getting the perm dye on bits I want red, thick conditioner, vaseline?
Oh my hairs just below shoulder length. Can't afford to go to a hair salon either.
I've got a dye poly colour shade red black. Help appreciated thanks.

Do you plan on doing it out of the salon? If so, it's quite tricky to do yourself. If so it's probably best to get someone to help you. It's possible, but if you make a mistake you will probably have to either dye it all over, or get a professional to fix it. Not trying to discourage you! Just as a backup plan.

I suppose you would purchase a hair dye, and section off peices of your hair. Darken up that colour, and leave the parts you want untouched. You could use a hair the or a protective wrapping (cling film, tin foil etc.) To protect the bleached parts from the dye.

Condition and shampoo your hair with what it needs. This will depend on the condition if your hair. If it's breaking off, it will likely need protein. If it's dry and brittle, it likely needs moisture. This will be easier to determine on what it says on the label. If it says it's 'strengthens', or 'repairs', it's likely a protein product. If it's mentions 'nourishing', or 'moisturizing' or hydrating, it's probably a moisture based product.

Sorry if this is all obvious to you. I wish I could be of more help but I am not a professional. To deal with a situation like this is fairly straightforward, so you don't necessarily need to go to an expensive place to get it done. However if you really wish to do it yourself I would get someone to help you, and properly research how to section off the hair and apply the dye to the roots. All the best if luck and sorry for rambling!

Thanks a lot
I've got 2 boxes just in case so I can dye all over if I mess up.
I've just had a look on YouTube they make it look so easy lol.
I'm going to go for it now before Gogglebox comes on.
I'll post a pic later and fingers crossed 😉

If anyone's interested here's the before and after.
It didn't come out as planned. The dye ended up running on the bleached/pink bits which I then rinsed after couple mins. It's bit darker & not as red as I'd have liked, but hey ho it didn't go green or fall out.
