Search for best Breton

fivefour3twoone · 13/10/2017 10:43

I feel like finding a Breton top should be easy but I'm having real problems finding what I want. I will spend any amount. So far I have tried - Boden (too thin and clingy), uniqlo (loved the look of it, great price but too thick and short in the body), have also tried seasalt and crew clothing and not got on with them either.
Anyone able to help me please?

Do a search this subject comes up a lot. My favourite is from St James it's a traditional Breton not a stripey T shirt.

Doobigetta · 13/10/2017 11:05

I like the thinness and clinginess of the Boden ones, and found one I got from Jack Wills was too thick and stiff- so maybe try those?

moogdroog · 13/10/2017 11:35

I have ones from Boden, Toast and Joules - my favourite by far are the Joules ones, with Toast coming second.

Onynx · 13/10/2017 13:13

I like the look of the Joules ones. Does anybody know what they are like for sizing? I am a 12-14 but prefer tops a little longer if possible. Are they a large or small sizing ?

Cakescakescakes · 13/10/2017 13:15

Sugarhill Clothing - online. Superb quality.

JoJoSM2 · 13/10/2017 13:42

The Joules ones are very thick. The length is ok - I'm 5'11 and manage.

Onynx · 13/10/2017 18:29

Thanks JoJoSM2 I'm 5'4" but pear shaped with a bum I'm always trying to coverGrin

imjessie · 13/10/2017 19:06

I like joules , they sit away from the body so not mega clingy .

WanderingTrolley1 · 13/10/2017 19:07

I've found the Joules tops to be best quality. I only wish they'd remove the logos.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 13/10/2017 19:09

Joules or Jack Wills. I live in mine!

blisterinthesun · 13/10/2017 19:20

I feel your pain, OP.

I found the Joules ones far too heavy / thick. Their sizing is bizarre on me too; 14 was baggy and unflattering, 12 was far too clingy and unflattering Grin My Breton search continues.

EdinaMonsoon · 13/10/2017 19:40

Petit Bateau do the best Bretons. They are good quality & a decent weight. They often sell them on the Outnet for around £30.

Margomyhero · 13/10/2017 19:42

Bam have this one Breton

Growingboys · 13/10/2017 22:10

Me & Em are nice - not thick, good quality, well cut

Appuskidu · 13/10/2017 22:13

My favourite is from St James it's a traditional Breton not a stripey T shirt

What's the difference?

Ididnthearanything · 13/10/2017 22:28

A Breton or marinière is quite specific in its design. A striped top is just that; a top with any kind of stripe.
A Breton was regulation wear for the French Navy initially before it became sea-faring wear. It is long-sleeved with 21 navy blue stripes (the number has something to do with Napoleon I think) and (again I think) 14 striped on each sleeve. The blue stripes are half the width of the white and I irc there are other specifics, about the neckline and length of sleeve. It’s quite a specific garment.

margomyhero thank you I've ordered a bamboo one. I'll also check out petit bateau and me and em as I've not tried those yet...

I wish I liked the joules ones - they just look grumpy on me, I don't know why but the thicker the fabric the more frumpy I look but I can't go too thin or clingy as I've got a wobbly tummy to hide!

*frumpy not grumpy!

Oh good OP. I have loads of BAM clothing. I fancy the breton myself - but have too many tops.

Let us know what you think of it.
