🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The Snailaversary and Winter is Coming, Luckily, we're Part Sheep 🐑

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

NEW since the last thread:

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

OCTOBER 2017: It's our snailaversary Cake! Our baby ripe toddler skins are about a year old now, or rather getting together on these threads about a year ago. I can't believe we're all still finding things to chat on about between the hair disasters. I know I always encourage a bit of catching up at the beginning of the new thread with how everyone's skin been progressing over the last couple of weeks/months but now I'm demanding more Blush and would really like to hear how everyone is doing a year on now, or however long you've been with us. Basically, pledge your undying love for these threads Grin

NB: I've removed the form from the OP as I felt there really wasn't a need for it anymore. I think I've also answered enough of those forms in their previous incarnation for a lifetime so it may just be a selfish decision but it's been made Halo

Do you remember the colour name mint? Lots of offers going on currently.

Ok have prepped some award ideas. I took the MN emojis as inspirations... maybe it wasn't the best idea so feel free to input and we can always switch it out if it's unmanageable but I felt it was a bit dreary to do best cleanser, SPF, etc.

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

Wink The Well Hello There - newest and latest find that gets your motor running

Angry The Flusher- money spent on this product would have been better put to use by flushing it down the toilet

Halo The Jack & Rose- the product you’ll never let go of because there’s plenty of fucking space for the two of you on that piece of wood. Damn you, James Cameron, for breaking my poor little tween heart.

Biscuit The LTB- it all seemed so promising, everything was going so great, then they turned out to be a narcissist gaslighting bastard

Envy The Child Prodigy- that one product that’s annoyingly good and isn’t afraid to be smug about it

Smile The Worker Bee- never the centre of attention but has been steadily chugging along like no other

Hmm The Troll- the one where you repeatedly asked, ‘Is this doing anything?’, but continued to use it anyway…

Confused The Flabbergaster- that one product or technique that wasn’t really supposed to be used like that or delivered well beyond your non-existent expectations

Blush The Sinner- oh, admit it because we’re all guilty of it, what did you do or use that wasn’t all that sensible like take an acid bath and had the disastrous results you really knew to expect

Good award titles! Grin

I have ordered a giant bottle (1l) of Bioderma shower oil. Ran out a week ago and missing it. Also ordered more Redken heat cure stuff. Goodness knows when it'll all arrive though.

Mint Oh it's wonderful it worked for you. Like winning the lottery! I did it 5 bloody times. From scratch each time too. Not good.

EnidButton · 31/12/2017 00:43

Oh balls pressed post too early and now lost my thread of thought. Sorry Mint! That was going somewhere. Ah well, back to happier stuff. Flowers

I will have to have a think 🤔 what my awards will go to. Though my Jack and Rose will be obvious...Grin

Ollivander84 · 31/12/2017 01:00

My toleriane cleanser has arrived (the normal dermo one), stocked up on 2 x 400ml bottles from EPP
I got some samples from space NK, one is the REN perfect canvas which looks expensive and interesting. Two words which are a fatal combination for me Grin

mintmagnummm · 31/12/2017 01:08

Bo it was beige something number 250 I think?? Where are the offers?

Enid I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you, it's absolute bollocks and very unfair, I have done it 6 times and had two ectopics, it's soul destroying isn't it.

I'm not usually awake at this time, I had a hot choc earlier with a tiny dash of brandy (I'm actually not a drinker but just had a fancy for this) and now I'm awake and unsettled 😏

mintmagnummm · 31/12/2017 01:12

Oooh it was beige mirage bo. Also liked one called nuit and jour number 202

botemp · 31/12/2017 01:25

I'm also in some sort of failing to sleep rut, I blame you all Wink

I thought Selfridges or another one had 10-20% off but can't find it now. All beauty is having a massive sale but not in your shade. Lookfantastic have it though, 20% off with code GLITTER 20, they're based in the UK with free shipping.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 31/12/2017 01:44

Thanks bo I'll have a look on look fantastic. I found it on feelunique too and got excited as it was only 15 quid but my shade was dearer lol (still less than shops though)
I think there must be an insomnia virus going around on here, bloody ridiculous 😴😴

Hi all!

Since I started using these products a couple of months ago my skin GLOWS! Strangers ask me what I use and accuse me of being 35 when I'm 50. Life changing. Lisa Eldridge swears by it. www.paulaschoice.co.uk

Tantpoke · 31/12/2017 03:16

Oh mint I hope you manage to find your lipstick. Ever the optimist Smile How annoying though if you have lost it. I hope you find one in a sale.

mintmagnummm · 31/12/2017 08:30

Nope bo it's still saying it's not applicable to the items in my basket Angry. Actually this has happened to me a few times with look fantastic codes!

Tsmummy08 · 31/12/2017 08:44

Flowers to Mint and Enid (and all of us who've had fertility issues)... Mint I've had a similar situation in that I've just got the one (DD 9) and she's often asked why she doesn't have a sibling etc. It's a hard conversation and I haven't gone into details yet..

I've also lost several lovely lipsticks over the years (usually when slightly tipsy!) - the last one was a lipstick queen one called Stoked which I found out was discontinued when I went to RP - gutted! Best of luck on finding your replacement :)

I'll work on my Snalies today...

botemp · 31/12/2017 10:01

It's not just you, mint, I tried using the link directly from my inbox and I got the same message, the LF15 code for 15% off did work Confused. You could annoy their CS about it but don't know if they're working today.

I think I might have that lipstick, Tsmummy08, although no idea where it's gone, I usually only wear it in summer, must be in one of my bags. I'm always finding some I'd forgotten about when switching out Blush

🐌🐌 THE SNAILIES 2017 🐌🐌

I’ll kick off- standing in my bathroom currently to make sure I don’t forget anything.

Wink The Well Hello There - a couple of things. Biore UV bright milk spf 50. I really like this, it suits my skin and does temporarily brighten like a nice primer so works well Day to Day under makeup. La Roche posay double repair moisturiser. A nice oil free (but still moisturising)ceramide and niacinamide containing moisturiser I use at night. I hope it becomes available in uk this year. Dry shampoo because I’m trying not to wash hair every day Klorane with oat milk one is the nicest but a bit pricey. Batiste original ok too. Soft and gentle 0% aluminium deodorant in ‘care’ fragrance only- other two don’t work. The only non anti perspirant I’ve tried that works.

Angry The Flusher- A couple of things from NIOD which I still have hanging around and probably should flush them. Hydration vaccine. A thick silicone ‘moisturiser’ that doesn’t moisture just sits occlusively on the skin (and I don’t mind silicone usually). Voicemail mask- mask you apply at night with a brown tinge that stinks! Contains plant stem cells in adaptive time released bollocks!

Halo The Jack & Rose- Cosrx low ph good morning cleanser. Great cleanser in the morning for me. Removes oil from overnight but never drying. Only need a tiny amount so will last forever. Evening cleansers good too. Body shop camomile cleansing butter good removed with Emma hardie cloth. DHC cleansing oil good too. Second cleanse LRP hydrating gentle cleanse (better than toleriane for me as less of a film left on skin). Cleansers are the one area I’m completely happy with

Biscuit The LTB- cosrx BHA (forgot full name) blew my socks off when I got a sample of this from another poster on here. Bought it myself but formula had changed and it didn’t do a thing (since switched back to PC)

Envy The Child Prodigy- probably not annoyingly good but definitely smug (because the brand is) NIOD MMHA. It does do a good job to keep my skin hydrated in this colder weather and I notice if I skip using it by having flaky patches, even though I’m oily.

SmileThe Worker Bee- LRP toleriane moisturiser, great for a lightweight moisturiser in the morning. TO Vit C -both types- work ok but I don’t have anything to compare. I’ll be trying medik 8 one once I’ve finished TO.

Hmm The Troll- Several of them, all TO funnily enough. Niacinamide and zinc. Sounded perfect for my skin. Promises of reducing oiliness and pores (it didn’t) TO azelaic acid, didn’t really do anything/don’t know where it fits in. TO retinoid 2%. I had high hope for this but I didn’t ever think it really did anything- I know it’s a long game but I would like to have seen something right?

Confused The Flabbergaster- probably having HD brows which went well. A lovely therapist convinced me and I’ve never looked back. She tints, waxes and threads them to a much nicer shape and gives them definition. Previously I thought HD brows- no way!

BlushThe Sinner- i don’t think there is one. I’ve been pretty sensible unless you count using differin but it is available over the counter in US.

mintmagnummm · 31/12/2017 13:47

I just got told I look 27 and I had to share it on here Grin

EnidButton · 31/12/2017 15:44

My hair stuff I ordered from feel unique last night arrived this afternoon. Shock

mintmagnummm · 31/12/2017 16:53

Oh Enid that's amazing! What did you order???

mintmagnummm · 31/12/2017 22:50

Happy new year to all you lovely ladies xx

EnidButton · 01/01/2018 02:02

MintJust some Redken heatcure conditioner. They're hair masks that heat up. Did get next day delivery but thought it'd be next week because of new year.

Happy new year eveyone. I hope 2018 is nicer to us all. 🥂🥂🥂

EnidButton · 01/01/2018 10:42

Super fast order was from Look Fantastic not feel unique.

AlexanderHamilton · 01/01/2018 12:06

Hi - I've been trying to catch catch up (there is so much) but I'm trying to help Dd with her skincare.

She has very sensitive teenage skin. As a young child she reacted to various common products & had excema. so she's stopped using a lot. However a few weeks ago she used a face wash (Johnson & Johnson silly girl) & was inflamed for a week. We are still trying to work out exactly what she's allergic too.

Her skin feels very dehydrated (& looks flaky). However she also gets blackheads & an oily patch around her nose each month. She wears make up most days (she's a dancer in training so it's expected. She's loOking for a good moisturiser. She's been using Bobbi Brown but isn't convinced it's hydrating enough. She uses Superdrug vitamin E hot cloth cleanser. She's currently trying Bare Minerals moisturiser. I don't think the setting powder she uses after her make up (stops it running/shining under stage lights or in a sweaty dance class).

I'be seen something called hylamide sensitive fix recommended. We are going to London in February so I wondered whether to take her to the Deciem shop in Covent Garden where they sell it?As it's a serum she would need an everyday moisturiser too.

Ds (13 & greasy skin) uses a salicyclic acid based face wash but I'm not convinced Dd needs one of those. After her clean & clear disaster she's just using Dove or Simple soap.

Sorry for the essay but I wanted to put as much info in.

botemp · 01/01/2018 14:27

Happy new skin year, everyone! Will get to my snailies soon, I hope.

Alexander, sensitive skin isn't something that can be 'fixed', it's something that requires careful management mostly. I wouldn't waste my time with the hylamide tbh.

Soap is no good, it will dry her out further and cause disbalance in the pH of the skin which is slightly acidic. Soap is very alkaline and therefore raises the pH level, that disruption causes further dehydration, tightness, and encourages bacterial growth which can lead to acne, whiteheads, and blackheads. Continue on in that manner and she'll reach that confusing state of very dry and tight skin with massive oil spills.

If DD is wearing stage makeup (or anything near that in terms of amount and coverage, long lasting/waterproof, etc.) she really would do best double cleansing. Oil cleanser or balm to start with, then a gentle second cleanse which is water based. The Superdrug Vit E cleanser would be ok to function as a first cleanser for most people but if she's wearing heavy duty stuff that's caked on a proper oil remover to dissolve all that is best. The Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Oil is affordable and easy to find. La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser (or ideally the hydrating one but that's only available ordered from France for now) as a second cleanse.

For a moisturiser, I'd get her the Eucerin Dry Skin Relief Face Cream 5% Urea. It's officially marketed towards dry skin but even oily skin gets on with it well, it's not heavy but it's brilliant for dehydration and tackling flakiness. If she's still in need of a hydrating fix and/or her skin barrier is massively compromised, you can get the Simply Pure Hydrating Serum from Superdrug.

The blackheads and excess oil production could be a side effect of the dehydration so just see how it develops, if it persists despite the dehydration improving then she can consider using BHA topically, a little travel bottle from Paula's Choice 2% BHA Perfection Liquid, used once or twice a week would work well in that regard.

Since she's so dry and sensitive make sure she keeps her face out of the shower (it will only dry and dehydrate it further) and that if she uses flannels it's with tepid water and never hot (and change them out daily). Considering she's so dry generally and has a history of eczema, I wouldn't cleanse in the AM, rather just rinse with tepid/warm water (but not in the shower). A thermal water spray will also be good, LRP, Vichy, or one of the other French Pharmacy brands, both to use after cleansing (then toweling or tissuing off) to mitigate the effect of tap water and before applying serums and moisturisers to help them penetrate better.

SPF is important at any age but probably best to focus on the more immediate issues first.

Here is my skin after scalpel Grin and with the new hourglass powder on. The powder sort of makes me look better I think!
