Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

NEW since the last thread:

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

OCTOBER 2017: It's our snailaversary Cake! Our baby ripe toddler skins are about a year old now, or rather getting together on these threads about a year ago. I can't believe we're all still finding things to chat on about between the hair disasters. I know I always encourage a bit of catching up at the beginning of the new thread with how everyone's skin been progressing over the last couple of weeks/months but now I'm demanding more Blush and would really like to hear how everyone is doing a year on now, or however long you've been with us. Basically, pledge your undying love for these threads Grin

NB: I've removed the form from the OP as I felt there really wasn't a need for it anymore. I think I've also answered enough of those forms in their previous incarnation for a lifetime so it may just be a selfish decision but it's been made Halo

enid I've just started to realised that I am more than likely wheat / gluten intolerant.
I've started to make my own gluten free bread with Doves Farm wheat and gluten free flour. It's really easy and I slice and freeze the bread for toast.

Mrs crimbles ?? coconut macaroons are great for a sweet tooth moment as is Betty crockers gluten free brownie mix.

Thats all I've tried so far, I have wheat free pasta but havent tried it yet.
As for supplements I take MSM tablets and spirulina.

Tsmummy08 · 29/11/2017 10:34

Enid and Tant I went gluten free last year (grain free at first) to combat inflammation.... My digestive system really can't handle it anymore, so it's easy for me not to eat it as I know there'll be "consequences" if I indulge in more than a bite! Family meal carbs tend to be focused on rice and potatoes, occasionally polenta/quinoa, and DH and DD can help themselves to normal bread. I don't really miss it but I do love a Genius GF crumpet or two, they're delicious :)

I've RP the DHC cleansing oil, which has become a firm favourite... that arrived this morning along with an eBay purchase of a sequined dress for an upcoming party that I'm hoping will fit! I love eBay but it's always a gamble....

Mint forgot to reply about the mascara, I just rinse any remains off after my normal double cleanse but there's often bit remaining in the morning. Small price to pay IMO!

BagelGoesWalking · 29/11/2017 10:53

Thanks Enid. I'll look out for samples when I'm in London. You've reminded me that I've got some Redermic samples from LRP sent with a couple of previous orders - must try them!

mintmagnummm · 29/11/2017 16:14

Tant please share your gluten free bread recipe Grin
Thanks tsmummy yes it definitely is a small price to pay I'm still loving it.

userallusedup · 29/11/2017 18:36

I was using LRP redermic eyes, but stopped as it was making my eyes sting. I was careful to not use it too close to my eyes but it seemed to migrate. I’ve gone back to my alpha h eye gel, which is an excellent instant fix and great under makeup but still in the market for something that might have a longer term effect on fine lines.

I looked into that colour wow stuff, what a faff! & I try to avoid using a hairdryer or heated appliances so definitely not for me. I have got a root touch up kit from colour wow, it works ok to cover a rogue grey in an emergency but it’s a bit messy. It came with a travel size shampoo and conditioner for colour treated hair and I wasn’t keen on either of them.

userallusedup · 29/11/2017 18:55

My lansinoh has arrived - small tube, must get expensive slapping it on your nipples Grin but will do fine as a lip balm, I’ve just put some on and my lips feel better already.

userallusedup · 29/11/2017 19:54

Has anyone tried Kiko Milano makeup? I’m looking on their website and it’s very reasonable, I’m not supposed to be buying makeup but rather tempted by the shadow sticks.

(Sorry Enid I’m stealing your triple post crown here Grin)

botemp · 29/11/2017 20:06

No, the colour wow faff would definitely not be very Parisian, Enid, if a Parisienne is spending that much effort on her hair it better look like she woke up looking that effortless.

I think the Kiehl's is ok value for money wise, you don't use a lot so it lasts a bit but it's not an amazing performer active wise but it's really comfy. I wore it for most of my twenties but there's a Bioderma one that's good too and cheaper in the basic range.

Problem with the 'performing' ones is that it's quite expensive to test them for eye safety and usually they're less active versions of facial crerams but less irritating. So usually less concentrated in a smaller volume but the money is spent on testing safety. Technically you could take a bland moisturiser and dilute an active cream into it to make your own eye cream but it's a bit risky.

Kiko is ace, eyeshadow sticks are the best. Lipstick, pencils, shadows, mascaras, are all great. The mineral powders are similar to the hourglass ones but less shimmery. You missed out on the BF offer of buy 3 get 3 though.

Pupsiecola · 29/11/2017 20:10

I'm a bit behind here. DH is currently in Vegas. He has my DE and LRP! (Blooming hotel charges $5 per order to receive stuff though, so that was $10 I hadn't bargained for. Bloody nerve).

userallusedup · 29/11/2017 20:30

Thanks Bo I’m going to order a shadow stick (or two...) and an eye primer (I do actually need that as my UD one is nearly finished) & having a nosey at the lipsticks too now, though I definitely don’t need more lip products. Shame I missed the BF deal but it’s all very reasonably priced anyway.

Tantpoke · 29/11/2017 21:35

mint I used the recipe on the back of the Doves flour packet, it worked brilliantly and the bread came out light and bread like in texture and not stodgy, heavy or dry as I thought it might.
I've baked a lot of bread in my time, the dough before it goes into the oven is more wet I guess than a gluten/wheat dough but its nice and easy to mix, no kneading and doesn't need too long to rise a little bit. You just need double the amount of salt than the recipe asks for.
All in all I'm really pleased with it.
I love crumpets so will definitely be trying out the GF genius crumpets mummy

Tantpoke · 29/11/2017 21:39

Bo I've just started reading the Paris thread, loving all your advice on there, I've been digging out my scarves and various forgotten items of winter clothing which Im looking forward to wearing again.

EnidButton · 30/11/2017 01:04

it's really comfy

This is a spot on description of the Kiehl's avocado eye cream. That's exactly how it feels. They should put that on their blurb for it.

Tant Schar do very good gluten free buns. I love the brown ones toasted.

(Small disclaimer for my posts about wheat avoidance and the cherry juice. My body reacts very obviously to things due to a chronic health problem so the benefits are fairly instant and tangible for me personally. I don't know how much use either of those things would be to a person with full health.)

mintmagnummm · 30/11/2017 14:30

Right can someone recommend me a good lipgloss.....no matter what one I try it always makes my lips look awful! It looks patchy and rough and just makes my lips look dry and terrible! Even though they aren't that bad!! 🤔😩

BagelGoesWalking · 30/11/2017 14:56

Lovely ladies of the snail... this came up my timeline - free mini set for £4.50 shipping. Quite decent sizes for minis

botemp · 30/11/2017 15:07

Last year DHC did a really cute 'Bento' gift set for Christmas that was really good value. Wonder if this is this year's version?

mint, I hate lipgloss with a passion, every time I wear it I'm reminded of the whole hair in face annoyance, so I've not tried many, but you could look at the Clarins Lip Oil, it's not saturated with heavy pigmentation but it has a subtle hue with a lipgloss-like finish and it's really nice conditioning for the lips themselves.

The wheat thing is interesting, I'm aware that those with skin issues usually have something else inflammatory going on. Actual gluten intolerance is really rare though, but I know there are quite a few who can't tolerate parts of wheat or a genetically modified version of it. I know that if I eat rapid rise ww bread made commercially I have a terrible time with it, whereas a stone ground sourdough loaf made by an artisanal bakery comprising only of flour, salt, and water is absolutely fine. Spelt is really popular here and I suspect it's down to the fact that it's not been tampered as much as wheat despite being quite a close cousin of it.

Tant, shh, it's all part of my master plan, first I hook you all on the French pharmacy goods, then the clothes, next the Revolution! Grin

JDSTER · 30/11/2017 18:56

mint I love Bobbi Brown lipgloss. There’s a shade call buff which is so flattering- people often ask what I’m wearing on my lips when I have it on. There’s a nice Christmas set of mini lipglosses which I treated myself to - all the shades look nice Smile

mintmagnummm · 30/11/2017 19:17

Oooh thanks bo and JDSTER I shall check both of those out

Pupsiecola · 01/12/2017 00:18

I'm hooked on the Paris thread 6 pages in, but must go to bed Smile.

Pupsiecola · 01/12/2017 00:19

Mint I have just bought a Lanolips tinted balm and I really like it. Not as wet and irritating as a gloss. Not too sheer. Quite moisturising. Not too expensive. What's not to love.

botemp · 01/12/2017 08:19

Apologies in advance for the continued consumer extravaganza but for whatever reason I don't receive SkinCity mailings anymore so I need to physically check daily what their spectacular advent calendar offers are as previous years have shown they're not to be missed. So I'm just going to park it here daily as a reminder to check for myself and SkinCity is one of the rare e-tailers I really like with the nicest and most helpful CS ever.

Of course, they start with Verso at 2 for 1 to torture me. My eye serum could use a backup but do I need two? I remember having this conundrum last year too.

Also, perhaps of interest to mint with the lip oil, all Clarins at 30%

mintmagnummm · 01/12/2017 09:14

Oh thanks bo which colour should I go for?! I want a nude with a hint of pink? I'm wearing naked palette1 lately so want something to compliment the colours??

mintmagnummm · 01/12/2017 09:16

Pupsie thank u, I already have one of those tinted balms and do really like it but just unsure on colour, my lips are naturally very pigmented so everything looks darker on me which I dislike!

botemp · 01/12/2017 09:29

When I bought it, there was only a raspberry colour and a honey colour. I had the raspberry which gave a pinkish tint, nothing shouty just very healthy looking lips but my lips are a tad on the dark side. If your lips are light I'd either get the candy or red berries or layer the oil over another colour lip product to intensify it and get the glossy finish. As you can see from the pictures it's very different depending on your base colour.
