Can some PLEASE help me shop for a trip to New York in January

I know it's going to be freezing. My current winter wardrobe is my summer wardrobe with a coat on. And a pair of socks.

I need to start shopping for a really warm pair of boots that are comfy to walk for miles in yet warm and have good grip. And that'll actually look ok. I also need a warm but stylish coat that isn't really bulky. Can anyone help if have any suggestions? My budget altogether is £150 so I know it's quite low but that's the absolute most I can stretch to. I usually buy my coats from the highstreet primark but I really don't want to spend my time there freezing my arse off or with really sore feet. I went to Paris earlier this year and took a pair of river island boots. Bu day 2 I was in agony and could barely put my foot on the floor as the balls of my feet were aching so much. It really put a damper on my trip as every step I took was agony.

Thanks for your help

January can be v unpredictable here, can be similar to UK temperatures (minus the damp) or really cold (-15C)

I recommend layers, and lots of them. Beware that anywhere indoors such as restaurants, subways etc will have the heating cranked up, even when not particularly cold out, meaning you will end up sweating v unattractively if you're in a 1 bulky jumper type outfit! Uniqlo's heat tech thermals have lasted me 6 winters here, and they're so thin that you can wear them under dresses, fitted jumpers etc

As we have the grid system, if you're going to be anywhere near the river, it can be brutal with wind so a hat / earmuffs are a good bet. I also second recommendations on decent shoes / boots -our pavements are pretty lethal at the best of times!

Locals tend to invest in a massive duvet style coat and then wear normal stuff underneath it - so you can keep stylish if you want to

I've been in January, weather was bright and dry but brutally cold and with a biting wind..it was freezing! I bought a North Face Metropolis parka (down filled, knee length, windproof) whilst there as my "stylish" wool winter coat just did not cut it. I was able to wear just that over normal clothes it was so toasty and easy to whip off once inside. You'll need a Trapper hat with ears (don't worry about what you look like), comfortable walking shoes (Ecco, Sorel or Teva - look on eBay or SportPursuit for good price) and proper thermal gloves (SealSkinz are great)...I'd set up alerts on eBay. Uniqlo extra warm Heattech base layers are great! I also took a few pairs of thermal tights I'd picked up from TK Maxx, worth a look in their ski section for base layers and socks. On my first winter visit I packed for style now I always go for warmth and the style comes via lipstick, good haircut and a smile! Oh, and if it's bright, dry winter you'll need sunglasses! They help stop your eyes streaming with the wind, too!

Fjallraven trapper hats are the bomb but very £££. Maybe ask for one for Christmas?! I love my earmuffs but they looked strange with a hat so I'd definitely recommend hat with ear flaps that clip under your chin, especially if taking a boat ride or as I did, open top bus tour.I promise you will not care what you look like if you're warm. Two layers walking socks are great if you're walking lots (which you will).

I have a 66 North fake fur lined trapper hat it works well in very cold weather it kept me warm in the Baltic's in January. I also wear mittens if it's really cold will add liner gloves too.

Try TK Maxx or sportsshoes.com for walking boots or trail running shoes - waterproof will be best. This time of year is when the manufacturers are selling off the old season designs.

Quick OP look at Lands End - this weekend's deal is up to 40% off outerwear with code LEAF50 and there are several pairs of boots in their sale - eg these

mintich · 09/10/2017 08:11

I'm going at the end of Nov and am so confused about what to wear! I've only ever been in summer

MorrisZapp · 09/10/2017 08:19

I live in Edinburgh and survive our winter in a beanie hat from Barts (they line the ear bit with fleece) and a pair of hideous but toasty 'thinsulate' fleece gloves which I bought for a fiver out of a tourist tat shop four years ago.

Ecco long boots are amazing - they're super-tough, but super smart. They have some in the Elaine range in their online outlet at the moment for around £100 - they have a lovely cosy lining. A cheaper option is Decathlon snow boots - if you click on pairs on their website they have a "limit temperature" so you can see which ones are suitable for very cold weather. These ones go to -18 C

Take layers - get a light, thin merino baselayer to wear under things. Aldi do these on a fairly regular basis through the winter for around £10. Then you need a warm midlayer (check out Decathlon's tops for skiing), and a really good coat.

Ski gloves - the ones with proper articulation - are absolutely brilliant in freezing weather.

And dont be tempted to tramp around in the freezing cold too long. I got frostbite (minor but it still hurt!) in the UK (yes I was wearing my many layers and hiking boots). I wasn't even in the snow all that long!

Fekko · 09/10/2017 09:01

My family love winter when my big hats come out! Funnily enough, my mum used to embarrass us when we were kids with her mad fur (yuk) hats and we would hide them!

Silverstreaks · 09/10/2017 09:27

Don't you want a long coat rather than a shorty jacket? I've just looked at mountain warehouse and landsend and both have long coats that are toasty and cheaper than the Decathlon one.
A long coat will be so much warmer and you can shed it quickly when you are inside.

Fekko · 09/10/2017 10:24

Long - even the warmest shorter coats let in a draught up your back!

loveka · 09/10/2017 10:41

Fit flop boots are like walking on air. You might find some on ebay or in the sale. I always wear some type of fit flop walking around cities.

JaneEyre70 · 09/10/2017 13:03

Second the FitFlop boots. And thermal tights from M & S were amazing under my skinny jeans. Warm without bulky.

IHeartNedFlanders · 09/10/2017 17:24

Thank you so much everyone, you've all be so helpful. Yes I think I'm going go for a longer coat, I'll have a look at the ones mentioned upthread. Whoever mentioned Uniqlo, I had a look last night and have put some of the heat tech tights and vests in my basket.
I am all for just being able to whip off my layers if it's warm inside and don't want to be faffing about taking off 5 layers to sit and have a pizza. So I think I'll go for long coat, thermal leggings under trousers, boots (I'll have a look at the fitflop ones, have heard good things about them before), hat with ears, decent gloves and a thermal long slee top to go under whatever I'm wearing. Hopefully that'll be enough.
Also thinking of taking a back pack? Only a small one to shove my
Phone and purse in.

Thanks again

Sorel boots in sale

misssmilla1 · 09/10/2017 18:04

Iheart be careful on the size of a backpack, and especially ones that look like a 'proper' rucksack, as over a certain size, you will have to check it in at a lot of the tourist attractions like Moma, WTC etc. Sometimes the lines for the coat check are longer than to get in and around (looking at you Moma...) same also goes for big golf umbrellas

Min keep an eye on the weather before you come. In the last few years it hasn't got really cold until after christmas, will likely be on a par with the UK (albeit generally with less rain!) its crazy warm here still atm, been wearing shorts and long sleeve t-shirts this week as a result
