Successful alterations

I got out all my winter coats and some don't fit any more (been doing SW) but I love them so much
Is it worth having them altered? I'm very wary of spoiling them, 3 are jaeger wool ones and would cost £3-400 each to replace
I could eBay them and try and replace second hand from eBay again - but the last couple of items I did this with were disappointing as the ones I bought weren't in as new condition whereas the ones I sold were

Have them altered, definitely! It should be a fairly straightforward job for a professional... alterer? dressmaker? seamstress? (Is there a gender neutral term for seamstress?)

I regularly buy things second hand and get them altered. Sometimes it's a bigger job than I (not being a dressmaker) had anticipated but the only time I decided it wasn't worth it was when I was thinking of buying a vintage coat with raglan sleeves, got advice first and decided not to bother. The rest of the time it pays for itself instantly - as you say, it would cost £££ to replicate that kind of quality by buying new.

I haven't got a recommendation local to you I'm afraid but, if you can't get one by word of mouth, try asking in a good dress agency or vintage shop as canny dressmakers / tailors often pitch up nearby - to attract customers like me! Or likewise a high end shop.
