Rain coats, grrr

Please help me find a nice one!

I don't like parka, going up a mountain style ones. I need a belt to feel comfortable and I push a buggy so hood is necessary.

A hooded trench coat would be nice but can I find one anywhere on the whole of the soddin internet.... grr

M&S have a classic trench that has a hood at the minute. Sorry don't have time to link it.

Have a look at Happy Rainy Days website - they do raincoats with belts and they also have a hood that can be rolled up into the collar when it's not raining. Bonus is that it's actually waterproof (and breathable) too - bizarrely lots of raincoats aren't actually waterproof!

M&S one is out of stock. Bugger!

I have done A LOT of research into this...

It depends how much you want to spend and how genuinely waterproof you want it to be.

The best compromise of waterproofness and style, in recent years, has been the Protected Species Mac in black (half price in the sale...still £100 though!) It is very cleverly-designed but a bit too sheeny for some. (There's a while subset of people on MN with a wealth of knowledge in this area!!)

Happy Rainy Days coats are nice but don't quite hit the spot for me. The sizing is not v consistent and the sleeves are weirdly wide and flappy.

Boden macs are sometimes good but the fabric seems to vary from year to year and they aren't really properly waterproof.

Joules is a good bet for casual, but they're quite distinctive. Lovely though. Same with Seasalt, although beware - some are proper winter coats and very thick.

If you don't mind a little bit outdoorsy then Didriksons is a brilliant quality Swedish brand - I have a couple of their coats and the Ida in black is the most versatile, genuinely waterproof lightish jacket I've found. It looks smart and is surprisingly flattering. Sleeves are long though.

Seasalt, Protected Species and Rohan all worth a look. Properly waterproof with good, practical features but not "full Millets".
