Dd has too much hair

Dd, 8 is blessed (?) with a a lot of fine hair. It also falls quite far forward on her face so she does a good cousin it impression.
When she wears it down it just covers her face.
Any suggestions of hair cuts we could try to thin it out a bit? She'd like a bob but I think it would just make it even thicker and into a big triangle.
Would layers or a fringe help or hinder?

Forgot to say it's currently a few inches below her shoulders

I have this kind of hair. Hairdressers always want to "thin it out" with layers and it looks lovely in the salon but then is impossible to manage afterwards and always ends up bushy.

I am now really firm that I'd like it cut all one length and I keep it fairly long so the weight holds it down.

A fringe may be cute if she has straight hair. Alice band otherwise?

GreatBigPolarBear · 01/10/2017 10:08

I worry that a fringe would spring out in all directions and add to the bush like appearance.
It does look better with an Alice band or clips I just wondered if there was a more permanent fix

Is it curly / frizzy ? I have loads of hair and co wash it which calms the frizz massively . The problem with thinning and layers is it can make it stick out more 😬..

I have loads of hair. Agree with the PP re layers looking good in salon but then not at home. I would suggest an Alice band

Could you learn to plait it into an Alice band. They look lovely.

It's pretty straight. A slight wave. Not exactly fizzy but not sleek like some children's hair.
I don't want to get into blow drying a certain way or anything like that-she's only 8 and we usually leave it to dry naturally unless it's cold.

Both I and dd12 have extremely thick hair. Dd has the double trouble of having a double crown too,

Hairdressers have always advised against her going for a bob as they say it will look even thicker and stick out. She has long shoulder length hair, all one length and some shorter, softer pieces around her face. Pretty much what I have too.

Dd has to use a tonne of conditioner. If she leaves it to dry naturally it goes majorly frizzy. It can sometimes be tamed with straighteners.

I feel a bit sorry for her sometimes. She sees all her friends with these lovely casual 'messy buns' and plaits etc. If she tries to even put her hair in a ponytail it needs 2 heavy duty very wide bands and even then falls down halfway through the day.

I've tried a thick fringe on my hair before and I quite liked it, but only when I styled it like in the salon. Otherwise it looks awful.

Sorry not much help really.

Ooh that plait looks nice-I wonder if she'd let me practise!

I sometimes plait the front of my hair like that . Also I have it in 2 French plaits which looks good simply because I have so much hair and they are fat plaits .

RubyGoat · 01/10/2017 12:28

There are a lot of brilliant tutorials on YouTube for girls hairstyles. Just Google what you're looking for & dozens will come up. My 5 y/o DD has massive hair too... she won't let me cut it so I had to get good at plaits.

Nyancat · 01/10/2017 15:41

I do this with the front of DD's hair, grab the front sections into a ponytail on one side and flip it through, keeps it out of her eyes. She has very fine hair but absolutely masses of it and it's slippy so hairbands don't stay in at all, that or braid it.
