Hi,

Just looking for some advice. I brought dd to get her ears pierced today we went to Claire's they said her ear lobes were big so they would need a longer earring that they didn't have in stock. Now I was caught in the hop with my dd we hadn't gone into town to get them done but she seen another girl getting them done and wanted them done. I then discovered how expensive Claire's is to have them done so now I am wondering should we go somewhere else? Or is it worth the price? She was so disappointed when the girl said she wouldn't do them.

I would take her to a proper piercing place where they do it with a needle anyway. Claire's don't seem to have a great rep on here for ear piercing and they use guns which I don't think is as good as a needle for a few reasons

DreamADream · 30/09/2017 21:58

Oh god please don't have them done a claires. They only get a few hours training and it's just so unhygienic sitting in a shop window! How old is she? You'd be far better going to a proper piercing place and having them done with a needle rather than a gun.

I had my DDs done in summer and it cost me £20

jpclarke · 30/09/2017 22:01

A needle? I had my own done with a gun? A needle sounds painful?

A needle isn't any more painful than a fun honestly. Much more hygienic and also better chance of healing properly as the needle is hollow thus creating space for the earring

Paintbox · 30/09/2017 22:03

A gun, not fun, obvs!

squoosh · 30/09/2017 22:03

Honestly piercing and titanium studs are the way to go. Cleaner, less painful, less likely to cause allergies. And the piercer is likely to have a lot more training than an assistant at Claire's.

Paintbox · 30/09/2017 22:04

Op, out of interest, how much is it at Claire's? You say it's expensive

squoosh · 30/09/2017 22:05

*piercing with a needle that should have said.

jpclarke · 30/09/2017 22:07

£65 in Claire's!!! I was shocked but I had my little girl all excited and I could say no then.

Whaaaaaaaaatttt?!

Shock
Paintbox · 30/09/2017 22:10

That is expensive. I recently had a piercing in a proper piercing place with a titanium stud and it was £20.

DreamADream · 30/09/2017 22:10

£65!! Bloody hell! I bet that was with their farcical fancy heal in 3 weeks cleaning stuff too? The only thing you should clean a piercing with is a salt solution freshly made with boiling water.

SteampunkPrincess · 30/09/2017 22:10

£65?? holy crap - go to a proper piercer

The piercing studio I have gone to charges £30 for both lobes. You need to be over 12 though.

jpclarke · 30/09/2017 22:26

Has anyone ever heard this been a problem before about the ear lobes??

OP posts:
Paintbox · 30/09/2017 22:27

I haven't. But Claire's pierced aren't properly trained imo so I wouldn't worry about it. A proper piercer would be able to pierce her ears I'm sure

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/09/2017 23:10

My DD has had Claires lobe piercings ( £40-£50 IIRC)

Her cartiliges (sp) were done at a Tattoo/Piercers (you'll need to check some areas won't do needle pierces under a certain age)

DD said it is much less painful and quieter. The ear is held in a clamp, you only feel pressure.
Titanium is less allergenic too. (£30 for her last one , single stud)

SoupDragon · 01/10/2017 13:43

I had DD's done in the local beauty salon. £35 which included an extra therapist do do both at once and stainless steel studs.

I had planned to go to a piercer but in the end got so confused researching them that I went with the easy option.

£65 is extortionate!!

SoupDragon · 01/10/2017 13:44

Which doesn't answer your question about lobe size. DD has only small lobes but there seemed to be a fair amount of the earring sticking out th eback. I can't imagine how fat an earlobe has to be to need a longer stud.

YouInTheMoonlight · 01/10/2017 13:51

Go to a proper piercing studio that uses single-use needles.

You do realise that the guns used by Claires cannot be autoclaved (plastic), force a stud through the ear rather than making a hole, and result in a fine spray of airborne tissue/blood that coats the gun? Plenty of horrible infections can be transferred by use of such guns. Please, please, go to a studio.

Falconhoof1 · 01/10/2017 14:05

I took my DD to piercing studio. They were brilliant, have good aftercare advice and said to go back if any problems. It was £15. I'd always recommend the needle.

Falconhoof1 · 01/10/2017 14:08

Re ear lobes- my daughter has thick lobes (piercer called then juicy😂). They have different lengths of bar bell so can use a longer one for the juicy of lobe!

Skittlesss · 02/10/2017 07:39

Oh no, don't have them done with a gun. Take her to a piercer and have them done with a needle. They used bars in my daughter's ears and we took her back after they'd healed so she could have shorter ones put in. Much better for any swelling.

I've seen Claire's doing both ears at the same time with their gun which terrifies me - what if they don't do it at exactly the same and the child moves their head slightly?

Ginkypig · 02/10/2017 08:14

Lobes come in all shapes lengths and thicknesses a good piercing shop will have a properly trained piercer who does this all the time multiple times a day. most see this as their career and take pride in having experience and expertise and training regularly.

They will have the skill to first select the right part of the lobe to piercegoes back to different lobes and also the right length of jewellery to allow for swelling and be able to change it for you once things are settled and healed and ready for the forever stud/hoop etc.
