Talk to me about bridesmaid dresses!

So my DSis is getting married next year and is on the hunt for bridesmaid dresses. For adult bridesmaids, who are a variety of shapes and sizes.

She is struggling to find dresses in the colour she wants (mint green) and has ordered a few things online but none have been very flattering. Although I may still be miffed that she turned her nose up at the lovely Jolie Moi dress I found and which only has limited sizes available now Hmm.

Where would you recommend for bridesmaid dresses and how far in advance would you look? Am a bit concerned about whether I'll be the same dress size come the wedding...

Budget is reasonable but wouldn't stretch to having dresses fitted - they need to be off the peg.

Any ideas?

ChiChi has a few here.

Oh, it's not linking properly. Select 'mint' and 'green' in the menu. The 'green' ones are more minty than the 'mint' IYSWIM.

I got my bridesmaid dresses from monsoon and they were beautiful. Not their wedding range, just standard range

My bridesmaid dresses were from Monsoon and I wore a Next dress for my friends wedding a year or so ago. I also looked at Chi Chi and also ASOS dresses as they seemed to have a good selection of colours.

Time wise I suppose it depends on when next year the wedding is. We had to wait until spring this year to get hold of the colour we wanted (blush pink) as it wasn’t in season in the middle of winter when we were first looking. But we did manage to try some styles on the girls so we knew what we needed to look for once the season changed and blush pink inevitably came back. I would expect mint green to come back come spring, but that’s not going to be a lot of use to you if the wedding is in April!! If you do manage to find styles you like then I’d have a look on For Him and For Her. They get a really awful reputation online, but my sister’s bridesmaid dress was from them and it was fab. Came really quickly and the colour was exactly like the swatches I ordered (definitely do that if you’re looking at them because the colours in the flesh are nothing like on their site!).

Thank you! This is really helpful - as I'm not married, I've not done this myself and so am not much use Grin.

MrsLettuce, thanks for that link - they look promising and in the right ball park price-wise (she is having a fair few of us and is hoping to pay double rather than triple figures per dress).

overmybreadbody, I really like that one! Her style is more Chi Chi though - she's ordered a few Little Miss dresses that don't fit well. Will have to try some persuasion....

NoParticularPattern, thank you - that's really helpful. Wedding is late summer so we do have time, and I did wonder whether we might have more luck in the spring. Also might have shed my winter layer by then Grin.

Davids bridal. My niece has just had her dresses from there and the colour range is enormous, several greens, and many styles in the same colour so you can mix styles OR colours. All very flattering. Customer service was good too.

What about John Lewis maids to measure?

GinUser · 01/10/2017 05:19

I delegated the bridesmaids' dresses to my sister, who was matron of honour as they were for her and her 2 daughter. My only stipulation was the color (as near to navy as they could get). She found a local dressmaker, who also dyed their shoes to match. Cost for making 3 dresses (in less than 6 weeks) was around GBP 200 or so, it was 2000.
If you have until next year, there is plenty of time to get material and have it made up to suit all ages and shapes of bridesmaid.

Another vote for Maids to Measure. John Lewis have a selection but there are more on their own website.

BewareOfTheToddler · 01/10/2017 23:14

Thanks again - she is definitely using ASOS. Have just taken a look at Maids to Measure and is sadly out of her price range. Some good ideas above, and I found a few promising ones on ChiChi London, which she actually likes and is going to order for us to try! Just got to stay off the cake now until next summer....
