Top knots and messy buns. Please share your tips with me.

I've got shoulder length, fine, layered hair and been trying for ages to perfect a messy bun or top knot but I'm not really getting it. It might be because my hair is layered. I've followed lots of you tube videos but it never looks right! The top knot is always too small or not on the top of my head Confused. Or sometimes the bun just looks like a big fan!
Could anyone share some tips or a good you tube clip?

I think it might be the fact that your hair is fine. Some types of hair just really don't work well for styles that need a lot of volume. Can't help with any videos, sorry. Have you tried using one of the doughnuts and just teasing the hair out after to make it less pristine?

I was going to suggest a hair donut too - but go for a small one as the huge ones look a bit ridiculous!

Thanks. I'll try a donut again. I tried one before and it looked too neat so I'll play about with a small one and try and mess it up a bit.

My hair is fine and quite soft so really crap to put up. But Batiste do an extra firm hold hair spray. I find if I spray that in my hair first before putting it up then I get the messy bun look quite easily.

Brilliant idea purple. I think that would work well!

I have fine hair too and can only get a good updo if I spray either loads of dry shampoo or sea salt texture spray in my hair!

Thanks hazy I'll try that too.

I have sort of fine hair, and I put my hair in a messy bun regularly - I put it in a pony-tail first, then back-comb the pony so its got volume and texture. Then I wrap around the back-combed hair and pin it with hair grips. I have shoulder-length hair.

You need a hair bun ... Not a doughnut but an actual scrunchie. Ensure it is exactly the colour. Claire's accessories are crap.

I get mine in Dublin (hairspray)

Hmmm. Never heard of that wobbly. I'll Google it.
