Just bought this dress and wondering if I am brave enough to wear it with ankle boots...

... for an evening do tomorrow.

www.whistles.com/women/clothing/dresses/lola-dress-26912.html?dwvar_lola-dress-26912_color=Black#start=1

I am in love with the dress itself, IT HAS POCKETS, I repeat, it has POCKETS!! Flattering cut and length on me, the fabric (although is viscose) feels lovely and light.

In the pic they have put it with ankle boots; I have never worn a dress with ankle boots before and am worried I can't pull it off. Also the only ankle boots I have (which are nice in themselves and barely worn yet) are tan. I think style-wise they will work (they have a low-ish Cuban heel and are a slightly Western style) but is tan and black ok? Tan doesn't feel very 'evening' ish either but it's a casual do and the dress is obviously a casual style so wouldn't look right very styled 'up'.

In the pic they do leopard print which isn't one I would go for (plus after buying the dress I can't afford new boots!!)

But at 40, can I pull off the dress with ankle boots look?! I'm not as skinny as the model in the pic (or as gorgeous... or as young...) though I am a size 10 and my legs are decent.

I can play it safe with a ballet flat (I have some quite nice leopard ones).

I haven't even tried the ankle boots on with the dress yet as I'm so scared of looking so utterly silly... Blush

Ballet flats make everyone’s legs look chunky except for ballerinas ... go for the ankle boots you’ll look cool.
My mum always told me never to wear Black and Tan - which means I wear it all the time ( though I prefer an oxblood)

ChinUpChestOut · 26/09/2017 14:26

I think the ankle boots will look great, but before I put on opaques with them I would be putting on a light fake tan, and wearing them with bare legs. Any chance you could manage that before tomorrow evening?

JessiCake · 26/09/2017 14:28

Ha! My legs are certainly not ballerina-like (though I have pathetically scrawny ankles).

I'm coming round to your way of thinking, Peppermeant, heels would be utterly wrong for sure. I think a nice slip-on trainer might work with it (I have metallic ones) but not for an evening do. So ankle boots it shall be!

And thank you fightthebear, glad I've found a dress twin Grin It's such a lovely dress, I'm hoping to get a lot of wear out of it.

ChinUp, yep i'm def going to give it a try with bare legs, I avoid fake tans as they are a disaster on me but I can get quite a good result with Sally Hansen so I will try that and try the tights and see which I feel happier in. I suspect the tights but I will give bare a try first.

I bought it last winter and wore it to death Smile

lurkingfromhome · 26/09/2017 15:01

I am 50, have that very dress and wear it with tan ankle boots and it looks great (if I do say so myself).

bluebellation · 26/09/2017 15:50

Go for it! I'm in my 60s and a few years ago asked my DD whether it was OK to wear ankle boots with dresses and she said 'it's OK for young people' (!). So I didn't.

Then last year I bought a similar dress to yours in Cos, only with long sleeves and realised I could actually wear what I wanted so paired it with opaques and ankle boots and I love it. What anyone else thinks is immaterial, but I actually think I look fine in it. (DD hasn't seen me in this look but I'm going to stay with her soon so will try it out and see her reaction Grin )

Floisme · 26/09/2017 16:26

I'm also in my 60s and wear dresses with ankle boots. That looks like a lovely dress and the only reason I wouldn't wear something like that would be if it was above the knee but that's because my upper legs are shot rather than specifically my age (although I guess it's age related).

I'm a big believer in getting out of my comfort zone every so often. It stops me getting in a rut and anyway what's the worst that can happen?

bluebellation · 26/09/2017 16:34

Exactly floisme - in fact reading the S&B boards has really helped me to avoid slipping into old lady territory (I hope!). I'm far more clued up and adventurous now than I was a few years ago; I know what shapes and colours suit me and I love seeing what I can 'get away with'.

polyhymnia · 26/09/2017 16:45

Another here a lot older than you who wears ankle boots and dresses. Definitely don't think it looks too 'young'/ try hard. In fact the look has been around for a few years now. Should look great.

twinkledag · 26/09/2017 16:56

I also wear ankle boots and dresses and I'm 38! Go for it!

Highlove · 26/09/2017 17:19

I am going out tonight in that very dress with black opaques (60D) and very probably tan ankle boots. I am nearer 40 than I'd like and not thin. I think it works; definitely not too young. At least I don't think so!

imjessie · 26/09/2017 17:40

I have boots exactly like that , I wear them with black tights and leather skirts or a similar black shirt dress . So comfy and as above I don't really think heels look right with a dress like that . Go for it !

Paintbox · 26/09/2017 17:56

Course you can do ankle boots. I havent worn a dress with anything else for years. Dresses with shoes feels all wrong to me

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/09/2017 20:26

Think it would look great with opaques and ankle boots.

Am personally not a fan of bare legs and boots, unless one is particularly coltish of limb.

Ttbb · 26/09/2017 20:43

I often wear dresses with ankle boots. My legs aren't great. I say go for it.

Ginkypig · 27/09/2017 00:55

Iv not read any of the rest of the thread so I might be repeating.

My opinion is a shirt dress like that has to have ankle boots or something similar because otherwise your in danger of looking like you've forgotten to put your skirt on if that makes sense.

Wishingandwaiting · 27/09/2017 07:09

That's not a daring outfit

That's a really nice stylish outfit

Totally with ankle boots. Possibly brogues but I'd always go ankle boots.

MinesaPinot · 27/09/2017 08:51

I'm 55 and I wear dresses with ankle boots.

Love that dress OP.
