skincare and rosacea

LunaTheCat · 25/09/2017 11:07

I have developed rosacea in the last 6 months - aged 52. I have always cared for my skin -used Brora spectrum sunscreen, lots moisturisers
I think the brand I have been using ( o- cosmetics, an Australian brand)may be making it worse. I have stopped using retinoids in case making worse. Someone suggested Paula's' Choice 2 percent BHA. Anyone else other suggestions? Doxycycline helped but made me nauseated. Metronidazole irritates skin more. I need a miracle!

I found eminence rose hip whip cream really helps calm and soothe redness. Laser treatment is meant to help but I think that's if it is quite severe. It stimulates and strengthens collagen , which makes it less likely to get those visible capillaries.

Soolantra has made an amazing difference to my skin. As effective as Doxycycline but with none of the downside.

I get it from pharmacy2u because my GP wouldn't prescribe it.

TyneTease · 25/09/2017 13:20

YY to Soolantra - miracles for me. It works if you've got the pustuley kind of rosacea, not sure how effective it is for general redness?

NerdyBird · 25/09/2017 18:37

strongandlong do you not need a prescription at all or did you get a private one! I want to try it but doubt my gp will prescribe as my rosacea is not that bad.

LapCatLicker · 25/09/2017 18:42

I swear by clinique redness solutions for cleansing, moisturising and foundation. It doesn't irritate and the foundation coverage is brilliant. If it's a remedy you're looking for I haven't found one yet that truly worked for me. I just keep mine calm and covered up.
The one thing that I was told was to avoid products with oil as they're irritants.

I would try a course of rifaximin, based on personal experience gut health is strongly linked to rosacea, and research is starting to back this up.

Sarahlouiseis33 · 25/09/2017 18:54

Another vote for Soolantra, it's been amazing for me too. Completely cleared the spots and reduced the redness. I also buy it from pharmacy2u as it wasn't available to my doctor for him to prescribe. He actually recommended I use pharmacy2u.

Sarahlouiseis33 · 25/09/2017 18:55

You don't need a prescription on pharmacy2u. You fill out an online consultation and one of their doctors will prescribe it for you. I think it cost me around £40 x

LunaTheCat · 25/09/2017 19:45

Thankyou puff paw. I am not sure if rifaximin is funded where I live but will check it out. All the research about gut bacteria fascinates me.

Soolantra - should be on most GP formulary now and is not an expensive drug to prescribe.

jeaux90 · 25/09/2017 21:10

Medik 8. Started their whole range on the first product which was just for rosacea

Figgygal · 25/09/2017 21:13

I'm 36 and had it now for around 2 years I have very little skincare routine don't wear makeup but need to somehow get in a routine and try to tackle this.

Puffpaw · 25/09/2017 21:59

Rifaximin is very unlikely to be funded for rosacea, but you could try a private gp. The other long term alternative is regular fasting, followed by eating a low sugar plant based diet including kefir, sauerkraut and yoghurt for a few months.

Flibbertyjibbit · 26/09/2017 08:46

Another vote for clinique redness range. I use the cleanser, daily relief cream, primer and foundation. Soothes my skin and great coverage from primer and foundation. DP gulps at cost but its worth it to have calm skin.

LunaTheCat · 26/09/2017 09:46

Thanks everyone. Some great suggestions.🤗🤗

For a cleanser and moisturiser, Cetaphil is used by many people with rosacea. I love it.

earlgreymarl · 26/09/2017 10:05

I didn't realise it for a while but for me Cetaphil was actually making my skin worse :( After gradually phasing things out and reintroducing products, this has helped me:

Dr Bronner's Castile Soap in baby mild
Garnier Micellar water for eye make up
Avene mineral water spray - as toner and whenever skin gets hot -for me - cooking, gym, sun
Nivea sensitive moisturiser with grapeseed oil

I think it is best to try one thing at a time, so you can know if it irritates or not.

I find being VERY gentle with my skin helps ( hard to do when rushing! ) and using only tepid water and patting moisturiser in. There is a youtuber I like called the giant project who talks through what she finds helpful.

I have been meaning to try kefir and the low sugar diet but you know Wine Cake Grin

earlgreymarl · 26/09/2017 10:07

Weirdly I find ( and so does my mum) that wearing mineral makeup actually is better than not wearing any - if I skip makeup for a few days, skin is actually worse! I use Lily Lolo with the flocked sponge ( more gentle than makeup brush)

BagelGoesWalking · 26/09/2017 10:15

Have you heard of the Ordinary? A lot have ppl seem to have success using Azelaic Acid for rosacea.

LapCatLicker · 26/09/2017 19:18

@Flibbertyjibbet I have to budget a portion of my yearly income for clinique but nothing else works. Avene, roc, cetaphil.
The thing is that we all have different skin types with a helping of rosacea on top so it's a case of trial and error for everyone.

LapCatLicker · 26/09/2017 19:20

p s. I would try the no sugar gut diet but that sounds a bit too much like work!
