Young women with very matte skin - why?

PollyPerky · 24/09/2017 14:45

Just curious really. I often look at young women ( 16- 30 ish) and they all seem to go for really matte foundation. I know this sounds weird but older women like me choose foundations that give a glow, are dewy or are reflective. Why is is that young women don't like their natural glow and hide it under layers of foundation or powder?

I'm reluctant to criticise because I did everything back in the days.
Super matte skin, contour, blue mascara, brown lipstick, green eyeshadow.

I looked great though. Grin

At least I never messed with my eyebrows.....

NotAgainYoda · 24/09/2017 19:30

And older ones (like me) need more moisture, and apparently shiny foundations fill in the massive trenches fine lines

I teach young women - mainly 18 - 25ish - and the big trend is really, really glowy, with tons of highlighter. The amount of false eyelashes for attending lectures is sometimes quite remarkable too.

BusterGonad · 24/09/2017 21:49

I'm a real make up fiend but even I find the trends for false lashes, big eyebrows and crazy contouring too much!

cuirderussie · 26/09/2017 21:59

It's horribly high maintenance. The full-on drag queen look is fun in a nightclub at 2am but every single day in an office? Just seems like yet another job the men don't have to bother with. Hmm

Peppermeant · 26/09/2017 23:19

It is a high maintenance look but mostly worn by young ppl who have the time and energy, who like it, have the guts to try new things and want to do it! So why not? Not everyone wants the "bit of lippie, swipe of mascara, blush on the apples, fresh skin" look. I dont have the time anymore with little kids but I love makeup and would love the time to experiment with different looks.

Gemini69 · 27/09/2017 20:50

I agree.. it does look high maintenance... it surely would be a fright to find the lady lovely you went to bed with .. looked nothing like she does the next morning... Hmm

cuirderussie · 28/09/2017 23:12

I imagine her face imprinted on the sheet like the Shroud of Turin..

Trills · 28/09/2017 23:24

The same reason people sometimes colour in their eyebrows.

Or draw pretend shadows underneath their cheekbones.

It's the trend.

MorrisZapp · 29/09/2017 08:40

As a student in the early nineties, my makeup look was foundation (I don't remember their being different types? I just bought a tube of whatever from boots, inevitably in 'ivory') followed by powder.

This I do remember. It was by Yardley.

And for blusher I used... nothing. No blusher for me. Because the 'I just put my moon face in a bag of flour' look is so very desirable.

I wore heavy black eyeliner and pale pink lippy.

I could cry for my lovely young face now, oh how I would like to give it a fresh sheen and a wash of blush. But I was immovable, bag of flour or nothing.

Desperad0 · 29/09/2017 09:23

It looks better on camera.

A make up artist once told me you can either look good on camera on in real life, not both. The kids of today prefer to look better on instagram then irl

MrsJayy · 29/09/2017 09:27

19yr old dd has greasy skin so she is Matted i think it looks fine i didnt go for the dewy look either not everybody does

MrsJayy · 29/09/2017 09:29

I think I used biscuit beige no7 foundation and cornsilk powder in the 80s there was no dew going on 😀

64PooLane · 29/09/2017 09:48

Arf at Angry Birds. That is EXACTLY how they look Grin

RavingRoo · 29/09/2017 09:54

I’m older but use matt as I have oily skin so it balances things out.

MascaraGirl · 29/09/2017 11:33

I''m 48 and look like an oil slick unless I use mattifying products. It was 10 times worse when I was younger, so I am sympathetic with the women we're discussing on this thread.

Annamadrigal · 29/09/2017 11:48

@MorrisZapp Grin 'bag of flour'!

NotAgainYoda · 30/09/2017 10:21

cuir

arf at 'shroud of Turin'

CotswoldStrife · 30/09/2017 10:28

Angry Birds eyebrows is genius and correct

Auburn2001 · 30/09/2017 10:28

Agree with op who said that many youngsters today prefer to make up for Instagram than for real life.

I'm also convinced that some of the makeup trends these days are to compensate for the harsh artificial lighting in shops that magnifies every flaw.
