Warm winter coat for cold mum

Toomuchcoffeetoday · 21/09/2017 00:27

I am fed up with being cold on the side lines so I am going to get a new coat. I have looked at lots online and have found this one Barbour Emmott

I have bought coats in the past that have started out warm and puffy but then gone thin. I have a Uniqlo jacket that is fab but it is not warm enough for standing for a long time on our windy hills.

Does anyone have this Barbour coat or recommend another one? I like the Joules Caldecott too but am slightly worried it won't be as warm.

I have a Parka London coat and it's wonderful. But my favourite coat is from Canada Goose. Much more expensive, but it's lasted three winters now and is in perfect nick. I live in an area that gets snow (not the UK or Europe) and it has always been more than adequate.

Toomuchcoffeetoday · 21/09/2017 00:36

Thanks SuperBeagle I have looked at the Canada Goose ones but apparently they are not waterproof so not practical for where we live. It rains a lot and I don't really want to spend that much money.

I will look into the Parka London ones but being waterproof is a deal breaker.

Really like the Barbour one.
I had a Boden padded jacket for football sidelines .... not the best looking jacket but very snug. Could gave done with being slightly longer.

foofooyeah · 21/09/2017 00:40

Sorry, unhelpful post, they no longer do the warm jacket.

Toomuchcoffeetoday · 21/09/2017 00:42

Foofooyeah I have been really pleased with my Barbour Cavalry Jacket. I wear it for dog walking and it is well made. I might order this one and try it. I am not very tall and don't want to end up looking like a munchkin.

I have a Landsend parka, this is excellent for warmth, and big padded coats are having a moment...

Missushb · 21/09/2017 01:42

I have the Joules Caldecott, it's lovely and warm! Still trying to work out how best to wear the hood as it's very large, however the coat is lovely, and toasty warm.

Toomuchcoffeetoday · 21/09/2017 08:32

Herecomesthesun oooh very rarely do I have something of the moment. :D

I have a replica army parka jacket with a fur trim on the hood, it's amazing, you can remove the padded lining so you can wear it as a lightweight waterproof in spring, the trim and hood are also removable. It's incredibly versatile and is probably my best and most used coat. It's from here www.itsamodthing.com/classic-m1951-fishtail-parka-coat.html

Having said that, Barbour are always worth the money, I've had my shooting jacket for almost a decade with weekly wear for shooting in all weathers, I've really abused it to be honest and it only now needs rewaxing. If you're up north it is worth a trip to their factory shop as I got mine for £80 rather than £200.

silkpyjamasallday · 21/09/2017 09:14

Oh and the women's sizes are tailored to fit properly, shorter length and sleeves. So no munchkin vibes

Toomuchcoffeetoday · 23/09/2017 23:56

Just to follow up my Emmott arrived and it is massive. It is cut with a slight a shape so the bottom is wide open. This does indeed make me look like a munchkin and I would be worried about the wind blowing up it. It looks like I am going to have to bit the bullet and buy one of these North Face Arctic Parkas that everyone on here raves about.

I always recommend the Lands End Commuter Long Down coat. Warm, waterproof, windproof. And currently on a fantastic discount.

GreenTulips · 24/09/2017 00:20

Buy some skins for underneath!

Apileofballyhoo · 24/09/2017 00:29

Was going to say go for down padding and a longer length no matter which coat you choose. I got a just past my knees length coat a few years ago and it's amazing how much warmer you feel. Like you're wearing a duvet. Bliss.

Toomuchcoffeetoday · 24/09/2017 00:31

Stepawayfromthecake what a bargain but I fear that the long would drag behind me like a train.

Greentulips I wear skins anyway as soon as it gets below about 4c, I feel the cold, and watch a lot of sport.

Look at lands end they do a midi length padded coat that is well insulated with sealed seams and is probably cheaper than Barbour. Used it for dog walking and watching rugby for years and keeps me warm.

FreeButtonBee · 24/09/2017 08:04

I have a aigle padded coat. It's going into its 4th winter in perfect nick. I wash it with proper down wash/proofer (£10 on amazon) once a year and tumble on low with a tennis ball to keep it fluffy. It's not totally waterproof (i.e. The seams will leak eventually) but it's pretty awesome for school run/weekend walk/to and from work in London

MulhuddartDrive · 24/09/2017 09:37

Have you looked at Craghoppers?

cometogether · 24/09/2017 09:41

The North Face Arctic Parka is amazing, it is like walking around in a snug duvet!

BubblesBuddy · 24/09/2017 11:48

North Face are good. Seasalt Janelle are waterproof but you need a fleece under them. Any skiing brand will have warm coats in their range. Jack Wolfskin are worth looking at too. Choose a coat with down and not man made fillings. Stores like Gaynor Sports of Ambleside have good choice normally.

RandomMess · 24/09/2017 11:54

Love my landend coat. Got it in petite so it fits and is very warm and waterproof.

Toomuchcoffeetoday · 24/09/2017 12:11

Thanks all. Bubbles I have the North Face Parka in my basket from Gaynor. Best price I can find. I hope it is the holy grail of winter coats.

North Face outlet store have/had Arctic Parkas in this weekend at £225. I know because I caved and bought one! Obviously not road tested it properly but it felt exactly like wearing a tailored duvet. Amazing.
