It's for my mum, early 60s but fairly trendy. Thanks.

Thanks all for your help and the links. Unfortunately she doesn't want a woolly one, she wants one of those chiffon-y things...but I do appreciate your help!

A polyester scarf is a big no no for me. The whistles one that has been linked to by a pp is stunning.
Something like this?

I have a mint velvet scarf and I'm disappointed that it's shabby looking now and didn't look nice for king like a lot of my cheaper scarves did

CurlsLDN · 21/09/2017 07:04

Oliver bonas have an amazing selection of scarves at the moment. Definitely not twee or frumpy, but in a whole range of colours that would be more flattering to anyone's face.

Mineral print

Metallic artist print

Metallic blue/grey (have seen this in store and it's really beautiful)

Silk

There's lots more, but those are my favourites

PeaceAndLove1 · 21/09/2017 07:26

I agree, the price is ridiculous.

Floisme · 21/09/2017 07:41

I think it's ok but it doesn't make my heart race - unless the writing is something interesting?

For what it's worth, I'm early 60s and if it were me, I'd ask for one of the JW Anderson for Uniqlo college scarves like this one They just look a bit fresh and different after years of floaty or oversized patterned ones. I don't know how they look in real life though and they're mostly acrylic.

Floisme · 21/09/2017 07:43

Ah sorry, I didn't notice you'd said she wanted a chiffony one. Ignore me.

brogueish · 21/09/2017 08:20

As others have said, £45 for polyester is not great.

You can get pure silk ones from East in a range of colours/prints for under £50. Alternatively, cotton/silk mixes are lovely and lightweight, although not quite chiffon. I agree that natural fibres will look and feel nicer, and wear better over time.

SoupDragon · 21/09/2017 08:25

In think the one in the OP is dull. The "dash foil" one linked to from Oliver Bonas is lovely. I'm trying to stop myself buying one as I have way too many scarves.

SoupDragon · 21/09/2017 08:32

There are some beautiful scarves on Etsy actually. I just went on an idle search for a dandelion print and am in danger of falling down a rabbit hole.

I hate to say it, but I've found Amazon excellent for scarves (scarf addict here). Found this immediately - 80% silk and just under a tenner if you bring your order up to £20 so that you don't pay postage. I'll look for a few more. www.amazon.co.uk/Gradient-colour-Scarf-Lightweight-Chiffon/dp/B01MQQFQN9/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1505978956&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=scarf&th=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21

Some of the Oliver Bonas ones are very nice and well priced. The Galaxy silk one (in the sale and well under budget) looks lovely if she likes blue, or the Jackson silk might go with more. I love scarves!

Squashit · 21/09/2017 08:35

A raw silk scarf might work. They are as light as chiffon but look beautiful and get better over time with wear. On Amazon they are less than £10 leaving you enough money for perfume as well...

OCSockOrphanage · 21/09/2017 08:41

I'm 61, and it looks a bit safe to me. Scarves are something to have fun and stay as fashion-forward as possible, cheaply. I'd prefer some much more actively fashionable to update my basics and reliable classics. Agree with everyone who thinks it's dear. I have some printed with city maps that are huge and colourful.

Bluntness100 · 21/09/2017 08:55

The whistles one on the first page is gorgeous.

Sorry op, I think the one you posted is a little dull. Get her something beautiful that's a treat and not just "meh".

mayhew · 21/09/2017 08:56

I'm close to your mums age and used to wear a lot of black (I'm pale). Now it's makes me look as if I have a terminal disease. I wear rich, Jewel colours next to my face now, tomato red, cobalt, teal.

Maudlinmaud · 21/09/2017 09:02

My friend has a hand painted silk scarf, it's gorgeous and was £££'s but it's not unlike the oliver bonas range linked by a pp. Some lovely scarves linked here, I'm very tempted.

blueskyinmarch · 21/09/2017 09:33

Does she wear those colours? I am mid 50's and I think that scarf is okay but I would rarely wear it as I wouldn't have much to wear it with. My wardrobe is based on a lot of navy. I have one I got out of to maxx which is my favourite and cost only £6.99. It is a light navy with small gold bluebirds on it. The gold is lovely as it lifts my skin and brightens my face. I fear that scarf you linked to might drain.

Dowser · 21/09/2017 09:40

Oh so she actually wants a scarf?
I'm a bit 🙄 About scarves as presents.
It wouldn't be my cup of tea. At 65 I'd want a much prettier colour.

Dowser · 21/09/2017 09:41

Amazon one is much nicer
