Would anyone like to talk to me about trench-coats? Have you got one? Do you wear it much?

I've decided to get one!

I work in the city and am imagining myself looking terribly stylish hopping off the bus in the spring showers in it.

Any thoughts?

Light or dark tan?

What length?

Anything to look out for or avoid?

I shall probably trawl the op shops, so general style tips rather than specifics would be useful.

I have two, a sleek black one from Marks, which I wear in showery weather. I wear it over my shirt and with trews. I also wear a sleeveless woollen knitted cardi inside if it's cold thin enough to roll up in my bag it's perfect for work. I walk.

I also have a cerise pink cotton one, for those days in summer when a long cardigan isn't formal enough. The pink one is more Aline and has a fitted waist.

I think it's very important not to get a beige one if it doesn't suit your colouring. If you're a "winter" like me, avoid the muddy browns, or beige ones.
Navy, black and jewel colours are much better for me. I look like a slightly warm corpse in cream/beige/brown/biscuit/muddy greens.

Shorter styles suit me better as I walk and the longer styles wrap themselves round my legs and bunch up like a dressing gown.

Those of you talking about the M&S one - do you mean pure cotton or cotton rich? I feel like the second one has too much lapel.

Oo, yeah, that second one is horrid. I like the first (pure cotton) one in navy or khaki.
