Help me dress for a Bollywood event

I'm going to a Bollywood charity event and we've been encouraged to dress Bollywood-style, which I'm quite keen to do. I've travelled in India before and had some lovely salwar kameez, but I'll be 16weeks pregnant at the event, which is too pregnant to fit into those and not pregnant enough to need maternity stuff!

So what do I get? Buy more salwar kameez? Rent a sari? Possibly useful information: I'm in West London quite near Southall, so I don't anticipate sourcing stuff being too difficult. Online works too, obviously.

Advise me, MNers!

You could try an Anarkali style outfit. They're quite in at the moment and tend to be empire line then flare out to midi length with slim trousers underneath. Loads here online (and I think they have a shop in Southall)

Add lots of bangles, bling and makeup and you'll be already!

Ooooooh, those are v pretty... Though not too cheap!

Is renting a sari a feasible possibility? I'd love to try one but I don't think I'm up to buy and tbh I'd probably need someone to put it on me, unless I did a lot of practising. I've always heard saris are good maternity clothes too...

Saris are great maternity wear but as you say, difficult to put on if you're not used to it. You can find tailors who can make you a "fake" sari, in that they'll stitch the pleats in place and to the petticoat so you just step into the skirt and there's a hidden zip and you put the remainder of the sari across your torso and over your shoulder. It looks really good and just like you're wearing it properly.

Anarkalis are even easier though and the shape is perfect for pregnancy. Ankle length is popular for functions/evening wear.

OK, you've sold me. I'll look at an anarkali/trouser suit and might see if I can pop to Southall to try some things on since I'm also a shortarse.

Thanks!

Oh, I LOVE this one. Would this be appropriate partywear? (There's a nice dinner, Bollywood dancing, etc, but it's not really a formal event, defo not the equivalent of "black tie".) I reckon this should skim my mini-bump, unless I explode in the next few weeks.

I think popping to Southall would be a great idea.

That suit is lovely but I would say it's less evening party wear, more daytime smart wear or meal out rather than dance etc with a Bollywood theme.

Yes maybe something a bit more colourful for the event. I would go into the bigger shops in Southall and get an idea of what you like then take a look in some of the smaller shops as you may get lucky with a bargain! There are also lots of shop where you can get accessories/jewellery there too

Fanks. Trip to Southall it is! I do love Indian jewellery too.
