Non "school shoe" school shoes for a 6th form girl?

DD's and my inability to compromise had lead to her starting 6th form in canvas pumps, please help before she gets chilblains! Her previous school had a strict uniform and due to her feet growing early, she has spent the last 5 years in one or the other of these (excellent if you're in the market!) black, lace up brogue-type affairs. Understandably she is now after anything-but however I am determined to buy her a pair of leather shoes with sensible heels in which she can walk the mile across the park to school college in all weathers with a backpack, etc etc. You can see here how I appear to her Grin Please do help before she wears me down and I buy the silver flatforms just to shut her up for the sake of peace!

What about black leather converse? My DD wears these as school shoes (yr 11) and she says they're great.

Is there no uniform at all at her college? Would ankle boots be appropriate? They are on trend (I believe!) and you could get sensibly-heeled leather ones.

motherinferior · 12/09/2017 12:33

Leather trainers.

xxHappyHippyxx · 12/09/2017 12:36

Dr Martens!?

PandaG · 12/09/2017 12:39

Docs? Or leather trainers? My DC had the leather converse in y 10 and 11, and regular converse in sixth form ( and anywhere else!). In fact, all clothes once in sixth form are just clothes, worn for any occasion, so one pair converse, one pair smarter leather boots, one pair trainers, one pair walking boots - all get worn to sixth form depending on the weather.

I'll have a look, thank you, I had forgotten you could get leather Converse. Re the ankle boots, we found a pair that she loved (Dune in TKMax) but the heel was too high. All of my attempts to show her similar pairs are completely wrong, apparently! In fairness they were beautiful but sadly really too high, not just me making a fuss.

She has a pair of DMs but very rarely wears them, I think they've just never been comfortable. I'll have a look at leather trainers. She lives in these little canvas deck shoe type things, I'm not sure if she would wear trainers as such as street wear but Converse type shoe might well work. I've suggested high tops but apparently she is "not about that life"!

She wants proper shoes, not trainers or converse. Has anyone seen any out there? Please!?

DMs need a bit of breaking in (thick socks and plasters) but when they are done they will be perfect. My DD walks a mile each way to 6th form in hers.

Sukitakeitoff · 12/09/2017 15:46

I chose and bought my own shoes by that age - could you give her a monthly clothing allowance and leave her to it?

DarkLikeVader · 12/09/2017 15:57

Agree with a PP, docs need breaking in but when you've done it it's so worth it. I had doc Mary Janes all the way through high school!

MummySparkle · 12/09/2017 16:01

I'd second DMs too. They do need breaking in though. Pascal ones are slightly softer and break in quicker, patent ones are the worst, but worth it!

My dd wears leather ankle boots, her fave this year are a pair from river island, they have a very small heel only about 1 inch and she says they are very comforatable.

doubleristretto · 12/09/2017 18:30

I'll have a go at talking her into giving the DMs another try; now you mention it I remember the pair I had as a teenager absolutely ripping my heels apart as I wore them in! The River Island website looks good, would you say that they are good quality shoes? I don't think I'm ready to just give her the cash and let her get on with it! She has applied for Saturday jobs and can knock herself out buying flatforms on her own money!

Thank you Gael, she actually took the phone and looked at them properly - you should be proud! She doesn't like the material Hmm

She's old enough to choose something herself, she'll soon stop wearing the high heels when she realises she can't walk in them. My eldest is 9 and I can't wait until she starts 6th form and she can wear what she wants. I really don't like school uniform, I think it reinforces gender roles.
