So I did a kondo of my wardrobe which left me with classic (dull?!) pieces in mainly Grey, navy white and black.
I've got skinnies/jeggings in all/most colours now.
I've got extra fine merino uniqlo cardigans and plain coloured jumpers from the likes of joules.
I wear converse or similar trainers.
I've got a nice leather tote bag in a neutral colour that goes with everything.
I wear plain coloured Tshirts or striped tops (mainly H&M and gap, some hush).
I just feel like I STILL don't have this dressing/wardrobe sussed.
Where am I going wrong?!

A skirt or two
A ' go anywhere' dress
A few strappy tops

A really lovely chunky knit sweater for A/W.

Leather ankle boots.

A couple of big oversized fine knit gauge scarves. Depending on your colouring but I like lilac and mustard.

Accessories really make or break a capsule wardrobe. Either jewellery or scarves (depending on your style) can make a massive difference.

Are you looking to add more clothes to your wardrobe, or just want to work with what you've already got?

If you feel like the outfits you have are a bit plain, do try adding some jewellery. For example with a plain black top and skinnies, wear a long pendant or colourful necklace, some earrings and a statement ring. If you can be bothered, some coloured nail polish will make you look a bit more put-together as well.

Etsy and Folksy are good places to look for affordable, funky jewellery. I love really long pendant or tassel necklaces at the moment, they make a plain black or grey t shirt and jeans look like an outfit. Big bright earrings are good too!

Definitely agree with PP

I live in the stuff you mentioned and for me the key is something that makes me a feel a bit 'cool'

I'm not a scarf person so for me it's

  • leather jacket. I adore my all saints biker
  • sunglasses (ray bans wayfarer)
  • slick of red lippy (Mac lady danger)
  • leather skirt or leggings
  • nails done (bright red or vampy rouge noir shade shellac)
  • badass leather ankle boots (replaced my knackered old ones with a new pair from &otherstories. Flat so they're comfortable but pointy and zip up back so they feel a bit rock chick

For me it's about adding a little bit of edge to whatever I'm wearing. I also feel instantly more put together with my nails done!

In the On the Spike capsule wardrobe she said have a crazy skirt. I kind of like the idea because I think capsule wardrobes do get very boring. On the other hand it does mean you've got something that is more memorable. Although with a few (good) exceptions I generally don't really remember other people's clothes so maybe that doesn't matter.

Unfortunately my jewellery tastes are fairly classic (boring!) too, small stud earrings, a single silver bracelet, a ring so I feel like I can't make a statement here. I don't get on with necklaces for some reason.
I don't 'do' skirts (dire legs!)
I love the idea of boots but not sure I could pull them off.
And I love scarves on others but always overheat and get tangled up when I wear them!
Am I a lost cause?!!

Justine Leconte is currently doing a capsule wardrobe guide series of videos on her YouTube channel, I've found it very useful so far.

That's ok! It doesn't have to be a huge statement. I think a few bits of any jewellery will always add something to a basic outfit.

Another way to add interest to a plain black/grey outfit is to wear coloured shoes or boots. Nothing drastic and 'out there', but just a colour other than black or navy. For example I have a pair of burgundy suede ankle boots with a gold buckle on the side. I love them and they subtly jazz up an otherwise very plain outfit. I also have some dark red ballet pumps with sparkly bits on the toes which serve the same purpose. (I think shades of red look lovely with black or grey, and I believe red is very 'in' this autumn!!)

CountFosco · 10/09/2017 20:56

Agree about shoes jazzing up an outfioutfit. I'm not very capsule so I have lots of shoes but e.g. wear colourful trainers with a single colour outfit and then get lots of compliments on the shoes.
