Makeup for wedding that doesn't 'flashback'.

Hoping I can get some collective wisdom.
I'm attending an outdoor wedding and want to wear SPF. I have melasma on my face and sun makes it worse so the SPF is essential.
What sunscreen/makeup/magic can I use that won't flashback under the wedding photographer's camera?

I currently use a body shop Skin Defence SPF 50 with Hourglass tinted moisturiser - which has seen my through this crappy summer, but no-one has taken any pictures, so don't know how this will photograph.

Thanks :)

You need to avoid any foundation that is described as light reflective.

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Spf 15 🖒

Flashback only happens under direct flash photography, rather than normal light - so you'll be fine in the main wedding photographs taken outdoors.

You basically need to avoid silica, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. It doesn't look like your current foundation contains any of these so you should be fine.

avoid spf in the foundation as it has light reflecting pigments naturally

ok completely didn't read the thread there! can you try a matte powder over the top to take away the sheen? or a powder with spf instead of in the foundation

Allwashedup · 09/09/2017 19:24

Try a small amount of bronzer on top of the foundation. I used the Bobbi Brown foundation and bronzer on my wedding day and had no flashback at all in photos.

Use a suncream on skin first and then use a foundation on top that can be photographed. My favourite foundation is MAC Studio Face & Body which is as light as a tinted moisturiser but can be layered up if you want more coverage. It is a water-based foundation and you put it on with your fingers rather than a brush or sponge - it sort of sets when you apply it. It is perfect for flash photography, and should completely cover your suncream rather than mix in with it because it is not oil-based.

I have never understood this BB cream with SPF concept, frankly. If I need proper sun protection then I would have to apply a BB cream with a trowel in order to get decent protection. I would really like Which? or someone to actually test the protection level afforded by a BB cream application that didn't make you look ridiculous. This is a marketing ploy IMO, and no-one should rely on it for protection.

Yep Haffiana - I agree which is why I always use separate SPF product. The Body Shop one is good, but as it's SPF 50 I fear the flashback for evening/indoor pics.
So... is the general consensus that I could use my factor 50, then my Hourglass Tinted Moisturiser on top and be ok?

I remember reading that the spf = flashback thing was a con. It's to do with the light reflective particles like previous pp say. Also to do with conditions, type of flash and skill of photographer! I did some experiments with the flash on my phone in a dark room taking selfies (I'm that cool) & found almost all of the foundations I sampled have a bit of flashback with those conditions. Some def more than others though!!

Do you find the moisturiser has enough coverage and staying power? I find that if I use a combo of illamasqa face foundation with nars bronzer all over (very very lightly, then more in areas i want to look bronzed) this reduces flashback for me.

Ok, thanks Peppermeant... may I should try some selfies?! Grin
The Hourglass Tinted Moisturiser is really foundation, to be honest. I was looking for a greater coverage one but if I'm chucking even more cash at my face, I want to be sure it'll photograph ok!

I used a smash box BB cream underneath my foundation as it has spf in it but the smashbox stuff is designed to work well under flash photography.

Pixiwoo have a YouTube video on makeup that doesn't flash back
