Why does knitwear do this?

I've washed a new jumper and it's come out with streaky marks on it like in the pic (if you can see it). It was on the wool washing machine cycle and the marks were there straight out of the washer, not related to drying. They are on both sides of the fabric. What causes them? Can I get rid of them or is it ruined? Should I take it back??

Is it acrylic or similar? They don't tend to react well to the spin cycle, even on the wool wash. If so, dry flat then a gentle iron over a damp cloth (e.g. a tea towel) will ease them out. Pain in the ass though.

It's mainly Viscose with some Polyamide and Elastane. I thought man-made fibres are supposed to be more hardy! I will try the ironing trick, thanks. Although now I can't see myself ever wearing it if it's going to take that much effort.

Was is left sitting in the machine for any length after the was finished?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 07/09/2017 11:42

I thought creasing too.

burnishedsilver · 07/09/2017 11:42

..after the wash finished.

TerribleTrent · 07/09/2017 12:18

No, it was taken straight out. It's def not creasing, the fabric itself is marked.

I've never seen this. Take it back.

TerribleTrent · 07/09/2017 22:24

I might have to. Although I'm sure they'll tell me I've washed it wrong Sad

Is it from Zara? I've had this with a grey Zara jumper. I think it's the spin and how much other stuff is in the wash as sometimes it's ok.

TerribleTrent · 08/09/2017 07:07

It's from Mint Velvet but now I think about it, I did have similar on a Zara one but it was about 15 years ago now. Did the marks ever come out of yours? There were only a few things in the wash as it was a wool wash.

What did it say on the wash label about how to wash it?

Stellato · 08/09/2017 07:10

I have a viscose top that does that. It comes out when I steam it. If you don't have a handheld steamer use the steam function on your iron?

TipBoov · 08/09/2017 07:13

I had a viscose dress that did this, and cardigans from Dorothy Perkins.

They do come out on a cool iron with lots of water sprayed on,but ultimately I can't be bothered and they sit at at the bottom of the ironing basket.

sashh · 08/09/2017 07:23

It was on the wool washing machine cycle

Why?

That's why there are settings for different things on the washer.

RoganJosh · 08/09/2017 07:25

I have Zara jumpers that do this. Wiping with a wet hand helps a bit. A cold wash helps too. As does drying on a radiator. Ironing sorts it out (with steam), but I'm not ironing jumpers.

It's really annoying though!

TerribleTrent · 08/09/2017 08:37

I'll try steam ironing it then and hope it fixes it. The wool cycle on the washing machine is the coldest/most gentle one so I put it on that. The fabric is synthetic but the synthetics cycle is longer and hotter so I don't think that would have avoided the problem.

The number of lines definitely varies with each wash.
