Returns policy at Jaeger?

Hi all!

I'm not a big clothes shopper and I tend only to buy things I'm very certain about so please forgive my ignorance.

I friend bought me a Jaeger jumper for my birthday. I really don't like the cut or colour, and it's the wrong size. I would really like to return it. But Jaeger are saying they are unable to accept returns without a receipt and date of purchase, and I can't ask my friend for either without appearing rude and ungrateful.

I think my friend bought the jumper in the sale and have told Jaeger this, and that I'm happy to accept the lowest amount for which it's been sold, but this doesn't seem to make any difference! The item is currently on sale on their website, so it's definitely current season.

Do I need to give up and put it on ebay instead? I am shocked as I normally shop at lower end places who have always been really nice about refunds!!

Oh, I should add - the item has the tags on still and hasn't been worn or washed!

If the friend is close enough to be giving Jaeger jumpers, are they not close enough that you could tell them it's slightly small/too large and would it be possible to have the receipt to try a different size? Then you can choose something else in store with the explanation that they didn't have the right size in stock but you loved x instead? Although you always risk it being a regift or an amazing charity shop find she's purchased. Otherwise yes, it's Ebay or a dress agency. Even with the receipt, you won't get a refund unless she paid cash.

No, I really can't tell her I hate it Blush Blush Blush I would be happy to exchange it for other goods at the same price she paid, but I doubt the store would even allow that from what you say. I feel terrible because even on sale it would have been £130. It's totally the wrong colour/size for me, though.

But if it's the wrong size surely she wouldn't be upset? I would hate to think I wasted over a hundred pounds on a gift which will never be worn.

Are you sure she did get it from Jaegar direct? She may have got it at TKmaxx.. they often sell Jaegar and I have bought some from there ....Not that that makes it a bad gift , their stuff is lovely and it still wont have been cheap. but JIC you do ask her ..

ikeadyounot · 06/09/2017 16:35

I just can't tell her. It's complicated - she takes things the wrong way sometimes and I fear she would be really hurt. I'm a wuss, too, and I don't want something that is supposed to be a nice birthday gift turning into a nightmare. I feel like any opportunity to object to the size was taken away by a long speech she gave about how it was supposed to be too big. To complicate matters, I am a disordered eater, currently overweight (size 14) but formerly anorexic, so the super-size XL is freaking me out.

laska - it's current season on the Jaeger website - do TK Maxx sell current Jaeger stuff? I thought they were a season behind, but like I said I know NOTHING about fashion.

Yes, you probably will have to put it on eBay unfortunately and hope that your friend doesn't see it or ask why you never seem to wear it.

I don't think there are any shops that will take an item back or exchange without some form of proof of purchase.

ilovecherries · 06/09/2017 16:54

I think then given it's causing you so much grief that I would cut my losses and get rid of it. It's a shame but you may get a reasonable amount for it if you re-sell it and then treat yourself to something you do like. I have also found that sometimes a direct request to CS online can work wonders. I recently lost a lot of weight and had some new clothes with labels etc still attached. Shops wouldn't touch them as way outside the refund/exchange period. I emailed the retailers via their websites, said I knew they were under absolutely no obligation to help me, but I wondered if there was anything they could do. Not one single retailer refused. Some gave me a credit note for the full price, some gave me a credit note for the lowest selling price, and one gave me a straight exchange for a smaller size. Might be worth trying a super-nice approach and see what happens?

Jaeger often appears on discount sites etc so I expect that's why they insist on proof of purchase. I know you've said you can't tell her but if you ebay it, she'll never see you wearing it. She'll either think you hate it or ask why- both of which seem to have more potential for upset than saying "thank you so much, it's such a lovely gift but it's too big/small/long"
